The New York Times Presents: Broken Horses

The “Sport of Kings” is a sport in crisis. Twelve horses died at Churchill Downs in Louisville during events surrounding the 2023 Kentucky Derby, forcing the track to suspend racing to investigate safety. A horse was euthanized on the track in a Preakness Stakes preliminary race at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course last year. Two horses — both with the same trainer — suffered catastrophic leg injuries and had to be euthanized at Belmont Park in New York during the 2023 Belmont Stakes weekend. This episode of The New York Times Presents investigative series examines the systemic problems and questionable practices of breeders, owners, trainers, veterinarians and tracks that are pushing racehorses beyond their limits.

Beyoncé’s highly anticipated album Cowboy Carter, released March 29, arrived during a revolution within country music as the latest arena of the culture wars in America. Some in the industry are welcoming more diverse artists, while others stick to a much narrower view of a genre that predominately centers around straight, white men. Call Me Country examines the impact of how high-profile artists like Lil Nas X and Beyoncé are challenging the country music status quo, and how Black artists in Nashville have been laying the foundation for this transformation for some time. Call Me Country features interviews with country musicians including Rhiannon Giddens, banjo player on Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em,” John and T.J. The investigation soon reveals evidence pointing to Rosario and Alfonso as possible authors of the crime. The Hoffman lineup concludes early tomorrow with Agatha (1979), a British drama about mystery writer Agatha Christie’s (Vanessa Redgrave) 11-day disappearance in 1926. Timothy Dalton also stars.

The day begins with the 1964 documentary The Big Parade of Comedy, which features hilarious scenes from classic comedy films produced by MGM during the silent and early “talkie” eras, including A Night at the Opera and The Thin Man. The lineup concludes early tomorrow morning with Hollywood: The Dream Factory (1972), a short documentary that looks at the studio’s history. Each Wednesday this month, Turner Classic Movies’ primetime/overnight lineup will consist of famous films with one-name titles, using the name of one of the primary characters. Tonight’s five movies in this theme are largely mysteries, beginning with Laura (1944), the classic film noir starring Gene Tierney as Laura Hunt, alongside Dana Andrews. Next is Rebecca (1940), Alfred Hitchcock’s Best Picture Oscar-winning adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic novel, led by Best Actress nominee Joan Fontaine and Best Actor nominee Laurence Olivier. The Rebecca of the title is never seen and has in fact been dead since before the film’s events, but she looms as a presence over everything in this psychological thriller. Hitchcock also directed the next film: Marnie (1964), another psychological thriller, starring Tippi Hedren as Margaret “Marnie” Edgar alongside Sean Connery. Following that is Agatha (1979), with Vanessa Redgrave portraying Agatha Christie in a look at the real-life mystery surrounding the famous mystery writer’s 11-day disappearance in 1926. Finally, Natalie Wood leads Arthur Hiller’s crime caper as Penelope Elcott, who robs her banker husband’s bank, in Penelope (1966).

One of the finest (and funniest) anti-war comedies ever made, this Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1970 production helmed by Best Director nominee Robert Altman is largely a different experience from the beloved, and probably more familiar to most, TV series it spun off beginning in 1972, but is certainly a classic in its own right. Ring Lardner Jr. won an Oscar for his adaptation of Richard Hooker’s novel, and besides Altman’s deft direction, the film is elevated by a terrific ensemble cast led by Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye Pierce, Elliott Gould as Trapper John McIntyre, Tom Skerritt as Duke, Best Supporting Actress nominee Sally Kellerman as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan, Robert Duvall as Frank Burns, Roger Bowen as Henry Blake and Gary Burghoff as Radar O’Reilly (the only cast member to carry over to the series).
