Five Fabulous Flicks

There’s a worthy film for every night of your week. Here are our picks for April 26-30. Remember, all airtimes are ET. April 26 The Night of the Hunter (1955) “Leeeaning … leeeaning …” Never has a Protestant hymn been so creepy. Robert Mitchum stars as the preacher with LOVE and HATE tattooed on his fists and an agenda from a place a little south of heaven. TCM, 6pm ET April 27 Sabrina (1995) Nothing will replace Holden, Bogey and Hepburn in the original, but this Sydney Pollack-directed remake appropriately casts Harrison Ford as the uptight stuffed shirt who gets […]

The Million-Dollar Question(s)

By RabbitEars Man, I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since the original, primetime version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, hosted by Regis Philbin, aired. (And 10 years later it still bothers me that they don’t end the title with a question mark.) Although a version of the show has continued in syndication with host Meredith Vieira, it doesn’t have quite the same panache without Regis. But that is changing this summer. To celebrate the show’s anniversary, ABC is creating new Regis-hosted shows for primetime in a special two-week event this August. So phone your friends and let […]

“Survivor: Tocantins”: Episode 10: It’s Funny When People Cry

Now that Brendan, Sierra’s only ally, has been voted off, Sierra knows she’s the next to go. She tells the tribe, “Let’s just try to make these next couple of days congenial,” which apparently involves her having many painful conversations with everyone as she explains why she made the “bad decision” to vote against Coach. Sierra and Coach talk, and he tells her she could’ve written down anyone else who doesn’t have the character that he has, which is superior because he’s never lied to anyone. (I’ll have to watch the tape again to see if Coach told Brendan he […]

Double Elimination Time On American Idol

by Ruth Anne Boulet This week we’re back to lip syncing. But at least this week, it’s with a purpose. The Idols are lip-syncing because they are being choreographed by the one & only Paula Abdul. Paula did not work with them on lip syncing. Ryan first pulls out Lil Rounds & brings her to the middle of the stage. But this time, instead of sending her over to the stools of doom, she just gets sent packing right at the top of the show. It’s almost as if Idol has decided she’s not worth the time anymore, so just […]

American Idol Left My Cake Out In The Rain On Disco Night

So it’s Disco Night on American Idol and the battle is on! Not between the contestants, but between the producers and the clock. We get no context as to how Idol defines disco. Was it time frame? Artists? Instrumentation? We’ll never know; we can only suppose a guess. One thing I know about this week’s episode is that I’m sorely disappointed in the lack of MacArthur Park in this week’s episode. Come on, kids! Carrie Underwood did it. Sigh. I guess it’s up to me…. Lil Rounds — I’m Every Woman by Chaka Khan Spring was never waiting for us, […]

BET To Launch New Network

By RabbitEars Particularly following the election of President Obama, there has been increased interest in the “NEWBOs” — the New Black Overclass — a growing group of African Americans who have gone from working class to the wealthy class at a young age, and who are now building wealth for future generations. These include those who have made fortunes in the worlds of sports, entertainment and media. Black Entertainment Television (BET) today announced the creation of a new network to appeal to such affluent, trend-setting and sophisticated black adults. The network, called Centric, is set to launch in the fourth quarter […]

“ANTM” Recap: The Amazing Model Race

by Dizzy Miss Lizzy Brazil, here we come!! But first, it’s been a few busy weeks, so let me catch you up. On Tahlia’s elimination: Thank goodness! On London’s elimination: Apparently she’d been getting through the competition stress with the help of her lord and savior Jesus Christ, and a whole lot of peanut butter cups. The chubby one will be missed. But not much. This week, the final six contestants, Aminat, Teyona, Fo, Celia, Allison and Natalie, relocate to Sao Paulo, Brazil. Alright, we’re caught up. Challenge 1: Amazing Model Race The girls step off the plane and into […]

Nice To Eat You

By Jeff Pfeiffer You have to hand it to Animal Planet. They can do “cute and cuddly” better than anyone else, with shows like Puppy Bowl, Growing Up … and Cats 101. But they do realize that the animal kingdom is vast and varied, so they also don’t shy away from the types of creatures that you will never see featured in “365 (fill in the blank) a Year” calendars, like the ones in these current and upcoming series:

“Scrubs” Recap: My Cuz

By Stacey Harrison Well, looky here. There’s Elizabeth Banks. Nice to see that despite having roles in every other movie that came out last year, she found time to come back as Kim, J.D.’s baby mama. They get along just fine, and J.D. has even learned how to turn their brief encounters to his advantage. He makes sure Kim has a reason to touch him, e.g. a bit of lint in his hair, or maybe a ruffled collar that needs straightening, because Elliot gets insanely jealous and demands sex almost instantly. Sometimes she even takes her underwear off while still […]
