Two classics directed by Raoul Walsh are presented in tonight’s double feature. First up is The Big Trail (1930), one of the many Westerns helmed by Walsh. This one is especially notable for a few reasons: It was one of the earliest widescreen films, shot using a 70mm process of that era, and it is led by a 23-year-old John Wayne in his first starring role. After that comes Walsh’s film noir/gangster classic White Heat (1949), starring James Cagney, Virginia Mayo and Edmond O’Brien.

This series brings together the untold story of teenage survivor Morgan Rowan, who was attacked by Alcala in 1965.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and as part of that celebration, Turner Classic Movies is recognizing famed Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa as its Star of the Month.
Born Kintarō Hayakawa in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture in 1886, Hayakawa found himself in Hollywood after graduating from the University of Chicago. There, he embarked on what became a far more lucrative career than he likely would have had if he’d followed his parents’ desire that he become a banker. Under his professional name of Sessue Hayakawa, the broodingly handsome actor became one of the highest-paid stars of the silent era, often playing a forbidden lover. Many of his films were produced by Haworth Pictures Corporation, which Hayakawa established and was Hollywood’s first Asian-owned production company. This period marked the peak of his acting career, though he did continue his screen presence in the era of “talkies” with a good amount of success.
You’ll see Hayakawa films from both eras on TCM Mondays this month, starting with three silent titles this evening. The lineup begins with director Cecil B. DeMille’s The Cheat (1915), the film that made Hayakawa a star, and concludes with two Haworth productions: the romantic drama The Dragon Painter (1919) and the thriller The Tong Man (1919), making its TCM premiere.

Enjoy several of the classic films that paired Hollywood icons Joan Crawford and Clark Gable, beginning with their first credited onscreen teaming, in the 1931 drama Dance, Fools, Dance (1931). Following that is another drama, Possessed (1931), the stars’ third pairing; the romantic drama Laughing Sinners (1931), their second film together; the musical Dancing Lady (1933), their fourth film, which also features the screen debut of Fred Astaire and an early appearance by the Three Stooges; the romantic comedy/drama Forsaking All Others (1934), Gable and Crawford’s sixth pairing; the drama Chained (1934), pairing number five; and Love on the Run (1936), the duo’s seventh pairing.

This funny, touching and sweet 1986 film was a cut above most other teen comedies of its decade when it debuted, and it remains one of the more realistic cinematic depictions of high schoolers in any era. Led by a fantastic young cast, including Corey Haim as the title character, Kerri Green (The Goonies), Charlie Sheen, Courtney Thorne-Smith and Winona Ryder in her feature film debut, writer/director David Seltzer’s film treats all of its various characters — whether nerd, jock, cheerleader or otherwise — as real and complex people, with inner lives and motivations, who usually don’t respond in the stereotypical ways seen in similar movies. The romantic comedy/drama is enhanced by composer Dave Grusin’s lovely musical score.

The director has chosen Terry Gilliam’s fantasy comedy/drama The Fisher King (1991), starring Best Actor Oscar nominee Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges and Best Supporting Actress winner Mercedes Ruehl, and writer/director Charlie Kaufman’s drama Synecdoche, New York (2008), led by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Samantha Morton.
