When Is The 2017 Rose Parade?

Pasadena’s Rose Parade has been a New Year’s tradition for over a century, but fans of the glorious, flower-filled event may wonder where it is on January 1, 2017. The Rose Parade has kept a “Never on Sunday” tradition since 1893, the first year since the beginning of the Tournament, that New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday. Parade organizers wanted to avoid frightening horses that would be hitched outside churches interfere with worship services so the events were moved to the next day, January 2. The tradition remains to this day, so the 2017 Rose Parade has been moved to Monday, Jan. 2.

This year’s theme is “Echoes of Success” and will be led by parade Grand Marshalls, former Olympians (and Southern Californians) Janet Evans, Allyson Felix and Greg Louganis.

  1. If it has been the rule since 1893. Never on a Sunday should continue.
Sorry all you all are so traumatized by this. It’s not every year.
It’s not a rule just to inconvenience you and/or your family. Start your year out with your God first. Have a blessed day making your own traditions. Hope they endure as long as the Rose Parade.

    • Please stop making others out in your image. We atheists and even religious persons who prefer to watch the Parade early in the morning should not be inconvenienced by a totally outmoded “tradition” (who rides horses to Church or anywhere else on a regular basis in Pasadena today anyway?). We have our own New Years Day tradition…watch the Parade at 8:00 a.m. This tradition was “made” when I was a child, as it was “made” in many other families. No one is “traumatized”, we are just very, very tired of the inappropriate use of organized religion and by people putting it before our rights. BESIDES, the Parade is over at 10:00 a.m., before most Church services begin, so between there being no horses to disturb and the fact that the Parade is over before Church services anyway, there is no conflict and the Parade can and should be on every January 1st, Sunday or not. Happy New Year everyone!

  2. The comments show what a nation of crybabies we are. 128 years folks, It ain’t about you! Its not the liberals, the Christians, the republicans, or the Gay Agenda people. Its a quirky tradition. Go hang out with the family, eat a good meal, and watch some football for Pete’s sake.

      • Did it occur to you there are families sitting together, right now anticipating this parade TO WATCH TOGETHER? Crazy your opinion of what thousands of families should do!

    • wha, wha, happy much? some, if not most have traditions unattatched to you, start the new year being offensive to masses? try being nice, its a new year!

  3. THE PARADE WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ON ABC AT 11 AM EST AND 11:30 ON NBC IS NOT PLAYING! WHAT IS GOING ON????

  4. Was confused and bummed at first, but love the reason! Happy to put God first to start the year. Thanks and God bless you all!

    • I seem to recall that the ultra religious party is Republican (Tea Party,LGBT bashers , right- to -lifers}. While the democratic party is quietly pursuing faith, the republican party rails and loudly condemns all others. By your comment, I presume you are a republican. NOT EVERY DECISION IS BASED ON POLITICS,thank goodness.

    • I am an independent and I am so sick of this bi-partisan distain and arrogance – not everything is political. By the way, there is no letter ‘e’ at the end of the word, ‘democrat’.

      • Right there with you! It is past, beyond disgusting how politics is a top heading over personal opinion by too many. Enough already, so telling about the one’s who head their conversations with political blast. This poor behavior has made all parties look pathetic!

  5. This is a fine example of traditions that have outlived their purpose. I’m sorry to miss seeing the parade this year.

  6. January 1, 2017
It is tragic they would change the day of the rose parade from 1/1 to 1/2. While trying to find the rose parade this morning, i found several ball games. Why dont they put the ball games to another day as well if they dont want to have the rose parade on sunday? My conclusion is: the media is trying to do away with the rose parade.

    • Are you a total idiot? Did you READ the explanation at all?! It was decide because of interfering with worship services! How many football games are played in the street?! NONE!!! Therefore no interruption of their play!!!!! Really, try reading BEFORE you make stupid comments!!!

    • No its a long time traditional rule, the city of Pasadena has had, didn’t you read the story.

  7. WHAT, no rose parade on the 1st day of new year, so very disappointed, I guess we will have to wait for tomorrow.

  8. I can’t believe they are sticking to an age old and dumb tradition! VERY disappointed!! Hope they receive ALOT of nasty letters and texts because of this!

  9. Wondering if the parade will be rebroadcast in the evening for those who work on Jan 2?

  10. I didn’t know that. I was looking forward to the parade as my New Years day tradition. What? Next day??

    • It is always shown on New Year’s Day but NEVER on Sunday. Repeat till you understand.

  11. This sucks. EVERY January 1, we watch the Rose Parade. Just b/c its Sunday, is that why they aren’t showing it till Monday? What about those of us who don’t have Monday off, our workday starts. Really, whoever schedules this, make it on January 1st.

  12. I am so disappointed. Here on the ONLY day off from work I have this week and I thought I was in Happy city.
Watching the Rose bowl parade in my PJS and a late brunch was the mini-vacation I needed. I appreciate the thought of honoring tradition but I am sad to miss it. I will be working a 10 hour shift on Monday.

  13. I can’t believe that it’s on tomorrow!!!!!! I am off today in my pjs. This is our family tradition Very disappointed it wasn’t announced

    • There are lots of us who agree. Why wasn’t it announced on any news show? I
guess this generation is more interested in tech stuff.

    • We all went to Church last night, got up early to watch together as we usually have, no announcements from our carrier either. Vaguely recall this in the past one other time. It is a bummer, but such as life. Many of us are upset, understandable, however its short lived, the ratings will slip, they’ll hopefully be more informative in the future. Slow cookers goin and we all decided to go back to sleep, will wake up later and feast and just eat left overs tomorrow while watching the Parade. Blessful New Years to you and yours. Try not to get pulled into the nasty commenters, I already fell for it, twice. Some are just naturally nasty in character.

  14. I love seeing the art work and design of each float. What a disappointment since I expected it today. Thank you for the information. I guess I will make the shift and look forward to viewing the parade tomorrow. Happy New Year Ya All!

  15. I think its a WONDERFUL tradition! Glad they are STILL sticking to it in this day and age when everything else seems to be changing. Thank you parade organizers!!

  16. I have looked and looked for information on MY favorite parade. I have my coffer and cake ready for the Rose Parade. I usually stay in my pj’s until it is over. Nothing should interrupt my viewing THE PARADE. OK, so I am old now and can’t remember it not being on the first day of the year even on a Sunday. So glad to know it will be on Jan 2nd this new year of many changes. Yea!!! Happy New Year everyone. May it be the best ever.
