When Is The 2017 Rose Parade?

Pasadena’s Rose Parade has been a New Year’s tradition for over a century, but fans of the glorious, flower-filled event may wonder where it is on January 1, 2017. The Rose Parade has kept a “Never on Sunday” tradition since 1893, the first year since the beginning of the Tournament, that New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday. Parade organizers wanted to avoid frightening horses that would be hitched outside churches interfere with worship services so the events were moved to the next day, January 2. The tradition remains to this day, so the 2017 Rose Parade has been moved to Monday, Jan. 2.

This year’s theme is “Echoes of Success” and will be led by parade Grand Marshalls, former Olympians (and Southern Californians) Janet Evans, Allyson Felix and Greg Louganis.

  1. We certainly enjoyed the RFD presentation of the Rosebowl parade on 1/16/17 and hope we are lucky enough to locate he parade next year. Thank you. Ken & Shirley

  2. It has finally happened, us poor people cannot see the Rose parade…..I have antenna TV; a once free recreation for the whole family; gone. No, we can’t gather round the live stream phone or computer.

    • You can still find the Rose Parade on ABC and NBC. And if you live in the LA-area, it should also be airing on KTLA-5.

  3. It was the one in 1966 when I joined in the audience at Pasadina. I was a
graduate student at USC Music Dept. then. I was very proud of USC Football Team and I am still tracing their match results back in Tokyo through internet every year. Me? I’, 75 years old. Hello everyone! I’m still alive.
I hope some TV Station in Japan take interest in broadcasting all the Rose Bowl game, especially this year.

  4. I live in Az. Really missed watching the parade today. Hopefully I will find it tomorrow.

  5. Try DirecTV Ch 345, RFD-TV for best coverage of the Rose Parade! But only if you are watching to see the horses. RFD-TV loves horses and spends more time on them in their parade coverage.

  6. We live in the Central Time Zone & know that the Parade will begin at 10:AM. Being that we don’t have Over-the-Air (OTA) TV in this town, can it be viewed via the ‘Net on-line?? If yes, Site will carry it (Live if possible)??

  7. We have Frontier cable tv and they dropped ABC from their lineup yesterday, Dec. 31, after a couple weeks of notification that we would lose ABC on Jan. 1. We live near Seattle and are thinking of switching to something else because Frontier is getting worse all the time. It looks like Direct TV is out too. Maybe they are owned by Frontier. How about Comcast or Infinity TV? Do they s5ill carry ABC?

    • We don’t have OTA, Cable or Sat-TV. Can the Parade be viewed on-line?? If yes, what Site will carry it Live??

    • I’m near Seattle and love my Direct TV, and I get ABC. Firing Comcast and going to Direct was one of the best thing I’ve done.

  8. You left out RFD-TV. They always show all of the equestrian units. Every single horse, pony mule and donkey. Hooray!

    • Why can’t they have a rerun of the Rose Parade for those that work on another date, or a rerun later Monday night?

  9. This is for the people saying school and work would resume on Monday so they would miss the parade and game. Standard rule is if a holiday falls on Sunday, the next day Monday will be considered a legal holiday also. You won’t miss anything at all.

  10. So sadI can’t watch this year. Monday is not a holiday and I don’t have anyway to record it

    • Dear Becky,

Hopefully some kind person will post the Parade on YouTube so you can watch it at your convenience. Or, maybe you will be home to catch the evening replay (which is usually on Channel 5). Good luck and Happy New Year.

    • Monday is a national and state holiday–sorry your job requires you to work that daY.

  11. I am very disappointed to say the least that the rose bowl game will only be aired on ESPN. In fact 90% of the bowl games are on ESPN.

  12. I was so glad I found this. I did a search for the parade on TV & couldn’t find it. What a respectful tradition to not hold the parade on a Sunday.

  13. I think it’s great that they are sticking to tradition. Quit whining people most of you probably have a dvr or can record it to watch at you leisure. Some people just want to have something to complain about. What a way to start the new year bitching about something so trivial when we have mom’s and spouses and children saying goodbye as their soldiers end their holiday leave. Get a grip people.

    • People return to work;students to school on the Monday after New Years so who is going to watch it on tv or watch it in person???
Why not have it later in the afternoon to avoid church, etc.
Not everyone has a means to record AND it is anticlimactic to watch after the holiday season is over!!! Totally bummed!!!

      • i agree it should be shown on local like ABC or NBC or KTLA ,this is our rosebowl and a lot of people do have ESPN

      • Mon Jan 2 is the legal holiday, since Jan 1 is a Sunday. Most businesses and schools are closed in observance of the holiday.

  14. What a wonderful, beautiful tradition of the Rose Parade from S Cal! The entire world watches and enjoys this beautiful event, no matter what day. I am so happy to watch it on Monday! Gives me time to start my resolutions.
    Happy New Year, World!

  15. Not only is the parade not on any channel with Direct TV two of our local Direct tv channels have been taken off the air. NBC channel 12 and ABC channel 9 has been taken off with a notice that it is unknown if they will be reinstated. I am seriously considering changing from Direct TV after being a customer for 20 plus years.
