The 2012 Miss Universe competition — the 61st annual event — airs live 8-10pm ET Dec. 19 from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino’s Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas, and both NBC and Telemundo will be on hand with live broadcasts of the pageant, which will be seen in approximately 190 countries and is expected to have more than 1 billion viewers worldwide tune in.
For NBC’s coverage of the 2012 Miss Universe competition, Bravo’s Andy Cohen will return as host, and will be joined by Giuliana Rancic of E! and Style Network. Jeannie Mai of Style’s How Do I Look? returns as a commentator, taking viewers behind the scenes to engage with contestants, talent and fans throughout the telecast. Musical group Train will perform, as will Australian singing and dancing sensation Timomatic.
Throughout the 2012 Miss Universe competition, 89 contestants will compete in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The telecast will conclude with Leila Lopes of Angola — Miss Universe 2011 — crowning her successor. New to the 2012 Miss Universe telecast, fans from around the world can ask a “Final Question” via Twitter by using #AskMissUniverse in the days leading up to the broadcast. One fan’s question will be read to a Top-Five finalist during the interview competition. In addition to the Final Question, Twitter integration will include fan comments and reactions during the telecast.
Judging the various categories and contestants will be a panel of judges including singer/songwriter CeeLo Green; World Series champ and MVP Pablo Sandoval; photographer Nigel Barker; singer/actor Diego Boneta; TV personality Scott Disick; celebrity stylist Brad Goreski; chef Masaharu Morimoto; Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete; Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings; and Bravo star Lisa Vanderpump.
Telemundo’s coverage of the 2012 Miss Universe competition will feature a Spanish-language simulcast, which will be hosted by Rashel Díaz and Omar Germenos, hosts of the network’s morning show Un Nuevo Día. Prior to the main broadcast, TV personality Monica Noguera and mun2 VJ Guad Venegas will host Camino a la Corona at 7pm ET, a one-hour pre-show special exclusively dedicated to the Latina delegates.
For the first time, Miss Universe and Telemundo partnered to offer online users the chance to select their favorite semifinalists, and the contestant with the most fan votes will be announced during the 2012 Miss Universe live telecast as she joins the 15 semifinalists on stage. At 12pm CT on Dec. 18, there were over 1.5 million votes cast.
