This acquired kids sci-fi/mystery series from the CBBC (a British public broadcast children’s channel owned and operated by the BBC) begins its story in 1997, when four kids vanish from an adventure camp in Silverpoint Woods. Over two decades later, one boy aims to find out what happened. Silverpoint’s first season has already aired in Britain, where it was nominated for two of BAFTA’s Children & Young People Awards. The show joins other popular acquired international young adult series on BYUtv, like Malory Towers. The entire first season is currently available on byutv.org and on the BYUtv app.

Catch a Classic!
The various aspects of sisterly relationships as depicted on the big screen is the focus of tonight’s four-film lineup on Turner Classic Movies. Up first is 1933’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated Little Women, which even by that time was already the third adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved 1868-69 novel, but was the first “talkie” version. With an Oscar-winning screenplay by Victor Heerman and Sarah Y. Mason, and helmed by Best Director nominee George Cukor, the film follows the four March sisters (played by Katharine Hepburn, Joan Bennett, Frances Dee and Jean Parker) in Concord, Massachusetts, during and after the Civil War. Next, in the comedy My Sister Eileen (1942), Best Actress Oscar nominee Rosalind Russell and Janet Blair play Ohio sisters who move to New York City looking for success, one as a writer and the other as an actress. Following that is the famed 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis, which follows a year in the life of the Midwestern Smith family at the turn of the 20th century, with much of the story specifically focused on the clan’s four daughters, played by Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien (who won a Juvenile Academy Award as the outstanding child actress of that year), Lucille Bremer and Joan Carroll. Finishing up the evening is What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). Director Robert Aldrich’s darkly humorous and horrific cult classic offers deliciously gothic and campy fun as it follows an aging former child star (Best Actress Oscar nominee Bette Davis) who torments her paraplegic sister (Joan Crawford), a former movie star, in an old Hollywood mansion.

By the sleuth’s side: unfaltering Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger). The partners are “firm friends,” Grainger says, but they’ll question whether there’s anything more.

As the hosts visit these modern-day historic landmarks, they gain valuable stories and knowledge about these locations from local experts.

Turner Classic Movies will be highlighting some of the most memorable of these each Tuesday evening in February, grouped by various themes. Tonight’s initial lineup is heavy on Katharine Hepburn/Cary Grant pairings; you can enjoy the duo in the screwball classics Bringing Up Baby (1938), directed by Howard Hawks; the Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Philadelphia Story (1940), which earned Hepburn a Best Actress nomination, was directed by Best Director nominee George Cukor and also stars Best Actor winner James Stewart; and the Cukor-helmed Holiday (1938). Tonight and next Wednesday, Turner Classic Movies tickles the ivories with evenings of films featuring plenty of pianos, piano music and those who play the instrument. Most of the featured movies are biopics of real-life piano masters, while a few deal with fictional musicians. First on the program this evening is A Song to Remember (1945), a dramatized look at the life of famed Polish pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin (Best Actor Oscar nominee Cornel Wilde). Paul Muni costars as Polish composer/music theorist Józef Elsner, with Merle Oberon as French novelist George Sand, Nina Foch as Polish soprano Constantia and Stephen Bekassy as Hungarian pianist/composer Franz Liszt. Next, the drama Song of Love (1947) fictionalizes the romantic triangle among pianists/composers Clara Wieck Schumann (Katharine Hepburn), Robert Schumann (Paul Henreid) and Johannes Brahms (Robert Walker). Liszt also appears here, portrayed this time by Henry Daniell. British melodrama The Seventh Veil (1945) follows, telling the story of a concert pianist (Ann Todd) who struggles to overcome a debilitating delusional disorder focused on her hands that makes her unable to perform. James Mason and Herbert Lom costar. After minor appearances in tonight’s first two movies, Franz Liszt finally gets to be the focus of the next film: Lisztomania (1975), a typically flamboyant production from writer/director Ken Russell that offers a surreal/comedic portrayal of the musician (played by The Who’s Roger Daltrey) as the first classical pop star. Prog rock legend Rick Wakeman, who also appears as the Norse god Thor, composed the film’s soundtrack, which includes synth versions of works by Liszt and Richard Wagner. The coda for this evening’s lineup comes with another film written and directed by Russell: Mahler (1974), a similarly unique take on Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (Robert Powell). BAFTA Award winner Georgina Hale costars as Alma Mahler in this film that was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was awarded the Technical Grand Prize there.

The table is set for cheers, tears and pan-sears as Season 21 of Gordon Ramsay’s fiery job interview enters its final leg. Having survived weeks of team challenges and unexpected judges (Danny Trejo for taco night!), the three culinary hopefuls left standing enter the two-hour endgame with the daunting task of preparing a five-course meal fit for a stable of famed chefs, including Curtis Stone, Nancy Silverton and David Myers. Only two make it out — after that, the heat is on for a grand prize of $250,000 and the head chef spot at Hell’s Kitchen in Atlantic City. Also: Abe Sanchez returns as sous chef.

Christina and her husband Josh Hall also encourage the kids to break free from technology as they hit a local store stocked with old-school games.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Thursday night celebration of legendary actress/singer/dancer Rita Moreno’s most memorable films continues tonight with four more films featuring the star in some of her earlier supporting performances. On the lineup are The King and I (1956), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated musical led by Best Actor winner Yul Brynner and Best Actress nominee Deborah Kerr; the TCM premiere of The Vagabond King, another 1956 musical, this one set in 15th-century France and starring Kathryn Grayson and Oreste Kirkop; and the Westerns Fort Vengeance (1953) and The Yellow Tomahawk (1954).

This action-packed, Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1938 adventure classic directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley took home three Academy Awards, for its editing, art direction and the rousing musical score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Robin Hood (Errol Flynn) accuses Prince John (Claude Rains) of treachery when he discovers his plan of overthrowing the throne while King Richard (Ian Hunter), John’s brother, is being held captive for ransom. Robin escapes John’s knights and assembles a team to help the poor who have been suffering the rich’s oppression. When Robin is lured out of the woods and finds himself sentenced to death, his men come to help, and Robin is left in the ultimate standoff with Prince John. Along with the action, the film also incorporates a subtle love story between Robin and Maid Marian (Olivia De Havilland, in one of her many popular onscreen pairings with Flynn) that does not overpower the initial plot. Basil Rathbone, Melville Cooper and Patric Knowles also star.

The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story

Elizabeth Smart returns to Lifetime as executive producer of this original film that tells the story of 15-year-old Kara Robinson (Katie Douglas), who was watering plants in her best friend’s front yard in South Carolina when she was approached by a man who put a gun to her neck, forced her into a plastic storage bin and drove off. He took Kara to his apartment, where he held her captive and sexually assaulted her for 18 hours. The film tells the harrowing story of how Kara survived her captor, Richard Evonitz (Kristian Bruun), who was later found to be a serial killer who was also responsible for the unsolved murders of at least three other young girls.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Saturday night double feature programming block offering films related to various aspects of Black History Month continues with two military-related entries. First up is A Soldier’s Story (1984), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated mystery/drama adapted by Oscar nominee Charles Fuller from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Soldier’s Play. Directed by Norman Jewison, the story takes place near the end of World War II and follows an African American JAG officer (Howard E. Rollins Jr.) sent to investigate the murder of a Black sergeant near a racially segregated Army base in Louisiana. The terrific cast also includes Best Supporting Actor nominee Adolph Caesar, Art Evans, David Alan Grier, David Harris, Patti LaBelle and Denzel Washington in his second feature film appearance. Following that is Sergeant Rutledge (1960), director John Ford’s Western that centers around the fictional court-martial of the titular character (played by Woody Strode), a Black first sergeant in a “colored regiment” of the U.S. Cavalry in the early 1880s who is wrongly accused of the rape and murder of a white girl. Costarring Jeffrey Hunter, Constance Towers and Billie Burke, this was one of the first mainstream American films to offer a frank look at racism and give a starring role to a Black actor.
