Court TV brings us “‘Til Death Do Us Part” from John Waters

I’d like to think that This Filthy World creator John Waters would approve of the fact that I’m writing this article during a two-hour layover in a dingy bus depot. The man who made a drag-queen combo of Clarabell the Clown and Marilyn Monroe a “Divine” star, and who reveled in the beauty of the depravity and dirt of his daily life in Baltimore, might find this circumstance especially apropos given the fact that just days ago I was weaving my way through the crew, cables and chaos of an elaborate location shoot at a chichi mansion in the suburban […]

Pussycat NO!

Posted by TVita I was fully expecting to loathe the exhaustingly titled CW reality series Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll. After watching the premiere last night, I discovered that first impressions sometimes are right! From that first cringe at PCD creator Robin Antin’s collagen-packed lips, to the naivete of “tens of thousands” of young girls who seem to really believe it when they proclaim that the Dolls are “all about female empowerment,” to the completely gratuitous vomit shots, the show made my stomach turn. Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for showcasing the talents of […]

Lisa Ling Addresses The Often Ignored Perils Facing Girls Today

Journalist Lisa Ling is a perfect example of what a modern woman can accomplish when afforded the chance to realize her full potential. Highly intelligent and talented at her profession (she reports for everything from National Geographic Explorer to The Oprah Winfrey Show), and brave and determined while getting the story (she recently went undercover in North Korea), Ling began making full use of her skills and opportunities when she was 18 and became one of the youngest reporters for Channel One News, and then rose to become the network’s senior war correspondent before the age of 25. But while […]

Eight questions with Donnie Wahlberg

Channel Guide Magazine: You’ve done feature films and TV. Do you have a preference of medium? Donnie Wahlberg: I sort of gravitate toward television in terms of work. It hinders you in some ways, but at the same time, it suits my personality better. I like to work at a brisk pace; I like to stay busy. I don’t want to sit in my trailer for eight hours to do one page of work, and in a big movie, that’s what happens. I want to stay on set; I want to stay close to [the project], because it sharpens my […]

Planet Earth: “Every Shot Had To Be A Rembrandt”

That was BBC producer Alastair Fothergill’s edict to his crew of established wildlife filmmakers during their five-year work on filming Planet Earth, a terrific, 11-part series premiering on Discovery Channel and Discovery HD Theater March 25, and airing Sundays. And they more than made good on that. Every scene does, indeed, captivate the eye and the imagination as it reintroduces audiences to the wonders of a planet we have increasingly taken for granted. New animal behavior and new locations never before captured on film are simply amazing as the series visits the Arctic, Antarctic and everyplace in between. The filmmakers […]

7 Questions With...

8 Questions With … Kate Flannery

1. What has been your strangest fan encounter? Kate Flannery: I had a seventh-grader from Florida who somehow found my number on the Internet, and he was calling me and asking to party with Meredith [her character on The Office]. His name was Sheldon and his voice hadn’t changed. 2. You’re at a magazine rack and can pick three magazines. What are they? I’m going to say Interview, New York magazine and Vanity Fair. 3. What’s your favorite sports team? I’m a Philadelphia girl, so I’m going to say the Philadelphia Eagles. They need a break. And [there’s] the fact […]

TV Show Dogs!

Canine chaos hits television this month with the return of two annual favorites — The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, airing Feb. 12-13 on USA Network, and Puppy Bowl III, airing Feb. 4 on Animal Planet. With this kennel full of cuties in store for our TV screens, that got us fetching recollections of some other memorable mutts we’ve seen over the years on various sitcoms, dramas and even commercials. Here, divided by groups like at Westminster (though slightly less snobby; we actually recognize Jack Russell terriers and mixed breeds!), are some of our favorite dogs from TV history: Working […]

Paul Blackthorne Plays A Magic Man In SCI FI Channel’s “The Dresden Files”

If you’re familiar with Paul Blackthorne, it’s likely from his days as a biological terrorist. The 37-year-old Englishman threatened to unleash a deadly virus on Los Angeles as villain Steve Saunders on the third season of 24. Now Blackthorne’s back on TV, playing a good guy — at least, relatively speaking — as crime-solving wizard Harry Dresden in the new SCI FI Channel series The Dresden Files. “He has an element of reluctance to him,” Blackthorne says of Dresden. “He’s not your out and out ‘let me save the world’ kind of hero; he’s more of the ‘well, I suppose […]
