Larry David’s comedy begins its 12th and final season of 10 episodes tonight with “Atlanta.” “As Curb comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be — the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character,” David says, probably joking. Cheryl Hines and Jeff Garlin also star.
Black History Month Weekend Marathon Continues

Catch a Classic!
Catch the final lineup of TCM’s weekend celebrating Black actors and stories, which kicks off with a 1984 episode of American Playhouse titled “Solomon Northup’s Odyssey,” about a musician in the mid 19th century who gets kidnapped and sold into slavery and is based on a true story. Gordon Parks directed the episode, and a documentary about his career, Gordon Parks: Moments Without Proper Names (1988), is the next title. Following that is another film he directed, The Learning Tree (1969), a bittersweet drama about a year in the life of a teenage boy born into a poor Kansas family. Then, Claudette Colbert stars in the comedy/drama Imitation of Life (1934), about a single mother who takes in a Black housekeeper and her daughter then starts a successful business with her. Following that is a short documentary focusing on the African American contribution to the war effort called The Negro Soldier (1944); the John Ford-directed Western drama Sergeant Rutledge (1960), which follows a Black sergeant who goes on trial for killing a white woman and her father; Sounder (1972), a drama about a family of Black sharecroppers in the Depression-era South who struggle to survive after the patriarch is imprisoned for stealing food; and finally, to close out the day, three sisters form a singing group in in 1950s Harlem in the musical drama Sparkle (1976).

After that, Henry Fonda and Vera Miles lead the docudrama/film noir The Wrong Man (1956), followed by Montgomery Clift, Anne Baxter and Karl Malden in another noir, 1953’s I Confess. This alternate-history drama evolved from the first Japanese-language feature film production by Amazon MGM Studios, The Silent Service, which has been successful in Japan. The eight-episode series includes the story of the film version, scenes not shown in theaters and the story afterward. The Silent Service originated as a popular manga series that was published in Japan from 1988-96, and it has also been an anime series in its home country. Set during the Cold War, it follows the captain of a nuclear submarine, Shiro Kaieda (Takao Osawa), who declares the vessel to be the independent state of “Yamato.” This first season depicts Kaieda’s story on a grand scale, including Yamato negotiating a military alliance with Japan and the subsequent Battle of Tokyo Bay. The first six episodes drop today; the final two episodes will be available next Friday, Feb. 16.

Turner Classic Movies will again be airing its popular annual event, 31 Days of Oscar, beginning this month and running through the day that this year’s Academy Awards will be given out (the ceremony airs live March 10 on ABC). Each of the 31 days is roughly split in half by daytime and evening lineups of films/stars that were winners and/or nominees in various categories. Starting this morning and going into the early evening are films that won or were nominated for Best Costume Design: Adventures of Don Juan (1948, winner), Raintree County (1957, nominee), The Band Wagon (1953, nominee), Flower Drum Song (1961, nominee), The Night of the Iguana (1964, winner) and Gypsy (1962, nominee). Beginning in primetime and going into early tomorrow are all Best Costume Design winners: The Sting (1973), Roman Holiday (1953), All That Jazz (1979) and Camelot (1967).
