48 Hours
CBS, 10pm

Thank technology for the answers in tonight’s chilling tale of Kassanndra Cantrell, a Tacoma, Washington, woman who disappeared in 2020, leaving hardly a clue behind — or so it seemed. “Your digital footprint [lets police] trace you to your last moment on earth,” says Natalie Morales, a contributor to the venerable true crime show who juggles her work as a CBS News correspondent with her hosting gig on The Talk. As Morales’ story “Kassanndra’s Secret” tells it, Cantrell, outspoken on social media and in person, lived with her mother, who filed a missing-persons report with local law enforcement as soon as she realized her 33-year-old daughter was not staying with a friend, as she had thought. One of the first avenues of investigation was an online conflict, Morales reveals: “The man she was talking to did say [on social media], ‘I’m gonna come and kill you.’” Then, via house security-cam footage and other digital documents, Kassanndra’s phone records and GPS data, the episode follows the trail to a stunning secret she’d withheld and, finally, resolution. The takeaway should deter potential perps: “We’re all being watched,” comments news veteran Morales, and “pings” of evidence are vital in every case. Ubiquitous cameras as well as smartphones and other tracker-embedded devices mean nearly every interaction is on the radar. “Anybody who would think of a perfect crime,” she adds, “there’s no such thing.”

Set in 1862, Gangs of New York follows Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio, in his first of several collaborations with Scorsese) as he returns to the Five Points area of the titular city seeking revenge against his father’s killer — Bill “The Butcher” Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis, fantastic as always in a Best Actor-nominated performance). The film earned Scorsese his fourth Best Director nomination, but he continued to be shut out from a win (he would have to wait four more years before he finally brought home Oscar gold for the first time with The Departed). In fact, Gangs did not win any of the 10 categories in which it was nominated; along with the nods for Scorsese and Day-Lewis, its other nominations included Best Picture, Best Original Song (U2’s “The Hands That Built America”), and nominations for longtime Scorsese collaborators Thelma Schoonmaker (Editing) and Michael Ballhaus (Cinematography).

Catch a Classic!

Turner Classic Movies’ 31 Days of Oscar is out of this world tonight with five Oscar-nominated and/or ‑winning science-fiction classics. When the Academy recognizes a sci-fi film, it is often for its visual effects and other technical aspects, and that is certainly the case with all of these titles. Sometimes, though, an especially well-done sci-fi production will also get Oscar nods in major categories, as did tonight’s initial movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), which earned Steven Spielberg his first Best Director nomination and Melinda Dillon a Supporting Actress nomination. The film’s incredible visual effects, created by a team that included the legendary Douglas Trumbull, were also nominated, and in nearly any other year Close Encounters likely would have won that and the other technical categories for which it was nominated, but it happened to be up against the even more impressive Star Wars. That latter film won a Best Original Score Oscar for composer John Williams, who had also received a nomination in that category for his score to Spielberg’s film. Among its eight nominations, Close Encounters did win for its cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond, and a Special Achievement Award for sound effects editing was given to Frank E. Warner. Next in tonight’s lineup is 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), which won for its visual effects by Stanley Kubrick, who was also nominated for Best Director and for the screenplay he cowrote with Arthur C. Clarke; the film was also nominated for its set decoration. Later in the evening are The Time Machine (1960), which won in its only nominated category (Best Special Effects); Destination Moon (1950), a winner for its special effects and also a nominee for its set decoration; and Forbidden Planet (1956), which received a Best Special Effects nomination.
