RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race: A recap of episode 2: RuPaul’s Gaff-in

It’s time for Round 2 of the RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Hunger Games! Yay!

Of course, we start off with some T and some shade about Pandora Boxx and Mimi Imfurst. Did anyone expect anything else?

Today’s mini challenge is InDaButtRu. That’s hashtag, #InDaButtRu. If anyone doesn’t know that reference, please educate yourself by watching the video below.

The point of this challenge is to figure out how well you know your partner. Can you answer questions RuPaul poses the same way as your partner? It’s very much like The Newlywed Game but with Drag Queens that aren’t married to each other. Except that they kind of are, at least until the final challenge where I assume it’ll be team member vs. team member. Anyway, Latrice and Manila are in trouble as they’ve realized they don’t know each other at all. Raven and Jujubee are killing it. As a super-special reward, they get 2 creamy pies in their face courtesy of the pit crew. Hooray!

Oh, if you missed this episode and want to follow along, watch the full episode now!

This week’s main challenge is RuPaul’s Gaff-in: a classic-style sketch show while impersonating a celebrity. Actually writing comedy is turning out to be a bigger challenge than some of these queens anticipated. Some teams try too hard; other teams, ok other contestants like Tammie Brown say that they’re not going to write jokes, but instead sing silly songs.

Ru checks in with all of the teams and tries to scare the crap out of each of them. Manila and Latrice are going to be Madonna and Oprah. Yara and Alexis are going with Shakira and Charo. Raven and Jujubee are going Bea Arthur and Fran Drescher. Shannel and Chad are doing Lucille Ball and Bette Davis (All About Eve era, thank you very much). Nina and Tammie Brown are doing La Lupe and Tammy Faye Messner. Nina doesn’t know who Tammy Faye is and Tammie doesn’t know who La Lupe is. That doesn’t sound like that’s going to work out for them.

First up, it’s time to tell jokes in the cocktail party with Mama’s Family matriarch Vicki Lawrence. Each team dances their way to Mama and tells a joke. Laugh track ensues!

The second segment — Howdy Ru involves saying “Howdy Ru” and then telling a joke. Laugh track!

The Peek-a-Ru Wall involves opening a window & telling a joke, like classic Laugh-In. Team Latrila seems to have a lot of problems with the doors. We wrap up with everyone getting a cream pie in the face.

Don’t miss Untucked, if you missed it last night

The final runway is 60s-glam drag. How awesome is that? While getting ready, the queens learn more about each other. Manila and Latrice get to know each other. Everyone gets to know about Tammie Brown. Raven decided that she wants to live in Tammie Brown’s head for just one day.

This week’s guest judges are Vicki Lawrence and Busy Phillips. Yara has a fierce Mondrian-inspired dress over a bikini. Latrila is serving it like Godzilla. Team Shad also has awesome outfits. Raven and Jujubee are both in super cute That Girl wigs. Team Brown Flowers went with matching red dresses.

Vicki Lawrence is strongly expressing her opinions, which is great to see in a guest judge. She loved Charo, and felt like she was back on the Carol Burnett Show stage. She also defended Shannel’s Lucille Ball where other judges weren’t so kind. Each team seems to have one member the judges like and one the judges aren’t so in love with.

Best judge quip of the night: Michelle Visage calls Tammie Brown Draggy Kaufman instead of Andy Kaufman.

Team Shad is safe first. Team Yarlexis are the winners of this week’s challenge.

Team Brown Flowers and Team Latrila are up for elimination. Team Rujubee is safe.

Lip-synching to stay alive is Tammie Brown and Latrice Royal. They’ve got to lip-synch to Ethel Merman, which has got to be hard. There’s not a lot of wiggle room with the lyrics. Team Latrila stays. Team Brown Flowers is sent packing. Looks like my hope from the first episode that Tammie Brown and Mimi Imfurst would be exonerated wasn’t to come to pass.

We’ll see which favorites go home next week on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, Mondays at 8pm CT/9pm ET.
