NBC airs The Office retrospective before series finale

Ahead of the series finale, NBC will air an hourlong The Office retrospective special produced by NBC News. Chances are you never looked at your workplace or your coworkers the same way after seeing an episode of The Office. The comedy series that started nine seasons ago as an adaptation of Ricky Gervais’ Britcom ends its run on NBC Thursday, May 16, in a 75-minute finale. Hopefully, viewers will get a satisfying send-off for Andy Bernard (Ed Helms), Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) and the rest of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton staff. TCA: Mindy Kaling will return to “The Office” for season premiere

At the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press Tour this morning to promote her new fall series The Mindy Project, premiering Sept. 25 on FOX, Mindy Kaling confirmed that she would be back on the season premiere episode of her former series, The Office, and maybe another episode. Kaling also said that her former boss, The Office executive producer Greg Daniels, would direct an episode of her new series. “Who’s the boss now?” the actress, who also co-executive produces The Mindy Project, joked. ________________________ ©2012 Fox Broadcasting Co. “The Office” and “Two and a Half Men”: I wish I knew how to quit you

One of the most difficult decisions to make as a TV viewer is knowing when to say farewell to a series you have been faithful to over the years. I’ve already said my goodbyes to 30 Rock, and I’m very close to pulling the plug on The Office and Two and a Half Men. Severing ties with a sitcom or drama you were at one time very attached to is never easy, and it’s something I don’t take lightly. In fact, to a fault, I probably stick around much longer than I probably should. I try to convince myself that […]

“The Office” is one bad hire away from cancellation

By Tom Comi With most offices around the country downsizing due to the economy, why on earth did NBC think it was a wise idea to stretch the season finale of The Office to an hour last night? The network has been scrambling to try to make the world forget about Steve Carell since he left the show last month, but everything it has done to this point reeks of desperation. Not only did that involve expanding last night’s episode by 30 minutes, but it also included what has to be a new record for cameo appearances in one sitcom.

Will Ferrell gets temp job at “The Office”

By Tom Comi One of the great things about big-time movie stars who got their start in television is they rarely forget their roots. And that’s why I am embracing with open arms Will Ferrell’s four-episode guest appearance on NBC’s The Office. Ferrell, who got his feet wet on Saturday Night Live, makes his sitcom premiere tonight (9pm ET) as a possible replacement for office boss Michael Scott — who is played brilliantly by the departing Steve Carell. And for those who have followed the careers of both funnymen, it’s no secret that they are close personally and professionally. The […]

Is Will Arnett the answer at “The Office”?

With Steve Carrell wrapping up his final season at NBC’s critically-acclaimed The Office, there have been a ton of names surfacing as to which actor is best suited to headline the show moving forward. Color me less than enthused about the latest name to enter the fray: Will Arnett. Reports have surfaced that Ricky Gervais — who starred in the British version and serves as a producer on the American remake — will not only appear in the season finale but he will be joined by Arnett. Don’t get me wrong, Arnett is a fine actor; but his track record […]

Surprise! Gervais lands temp job at “The Office”

By Tom Comi The worst-kept secret in Hollywood was confirmed late last week when Ricky Gervais admitted that he will not only be making a cameo appearance on The Office next week but he will be playing the character he created for the British show of the same name.  The episode is scheduled to air January 27 and will feature Gervais playing paper salesman David Brent, whose counterpart in the U.S. version is Michael Scott (portrayed by funnyman Steve Carell). Gervais told Piers Morgan on CNN last week that he agreed to make the cameo as an homage to Carell, […]

“The Office” version of Monopoly coming in June

It was adapted into Clue last year, and now NBC’s hit comedy The Office is being formatted into the classic board game Monopoly, with the version set to hit store shelves in June. The game is created by USAOPOLY under license from Hasbro and NBC Universal. The new take basically transforms the traditional game board properties into popular locations from the show. Additionally, players might land on “RUDIT-DIT-D’DOO!” (Community Chest), “That’s What She Said!” (Chance), Donation to Rabies Fun Run (Luxury Tax) or Buy a Hug From Phyllis at Crime Aid Auction (Income Tax). Game locations and businesses, and their […]

“The Office” recap: The Promotion

By Mike Frey After the events of last week’s episode, Jim and Michael are settling into their positions as co-managers of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch. Understandably, there’s a bit of friction. Jim thinks Michael should waste less of his employee’s time with meetings about toilet paper that devolve into discussions about the planets (think Uranus). Michael is upset that he’s no longer the undisputed leader of the office. Plus, as Dwight notes, Jim’s not as matronly as Phyllis. So there’s that. A power struggle ensues, rivaling the rivalries of Paris and Nicole, and Heidi and L.C. The issue comes […]
