Supergirl news: The Black Mercy! Indigo! Cast and creators talk what — and who — is on the horizon

The cast and crew of the freshman superhero hit Supergirl took questions from Television Critics Association reporters yesterday on the CBS soundstage that housed the series’ D.E.O. headquarters. The first query pertained to the series’ powerful Red Tornado episode which showed Supergirl unleashing a torrent of emotions in the face of a formidable opponent — and the realization that General Lane sought her help and then sabotaged her.  Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist (dressed in Kara-appropriate prep wear and ponytail) took first comments. “That is one of my favorite episodes that we’ve done to date, just because of what I got to explore in that theme […]

Supergirl Season 1 Episode 8 Recap: Hostile Takeover

The Kryptonian family feud comes to a head on the Supergirl midseason finale. Having escaped Astra and returned to the DEO — where Alex tells her to rust Hank Henshaw and let them handle Kara’s aunt — Kara discovers Astra hovering over CatCo. The two go to battle. But during each of their encounters you get a sense of just how close the two were, especially during flashbacks to when Kara was a little girl. They fight, but exhibit restraint when each is in a vulnerable position. There is — or was — love between them. Supergirl eventually captures Astra and […]

Supergirl Season 1 Episode 7 Recap: Human for a Day

On this week’s episode, Supergirl deals with the loss of her powers after the fight with Red Tornado and gets a taste of what being human is all about. This includes catching the common cold and taking (GASP!) public transportation! She feels pain, appearing vulnerable, and the timing couldn’t be worse after an earthquake leads to the escape of a DEO prisoner in Jemm. The villain can control minds and plans to release the other inmates. Alex finds it hard to follow orders from Hank Henshaw as she ponders what he is hiding about her dad’s death. Henshaw has her stay […]

Supergirl Season 1 Episode 6 Recap: Red Faced

It’s alien versus android when our Maiden of Might tangles with Red Tornado this week on Supergirl. The great episode delves into the root of Kara’s personal and professional frustrations. She may be a heroine with extraordinary powers, but there is a vulnerability that allows us to relate to her. Even though Kara doesn’t consider herself “normal,” we see she goes through many of the same things we do. She has to sit on the sidelines with a supportive smile on her face while her crush Jimmy is with another woman. Cat is a demanding boss who is never satisfied. […]

Supergirl Season 1 Episode 5 Recap: How Does She Do It?

On this week’s Supergirl, we learn that Kara may be competent as an assistant and courageous as Supergirl but she’s a horrible babysitter. We learned this when she volunteers to watch Cat’s son Carter so her boss can accept a media award out of town. But Kara is preoccupied trying to stop a series of bombs at various spots connected to Maxwell Lord’s tech company. The alleged culprit is a distraught former employee named Ethan Knox, who looks to ruin everything the mogul has created to make him pay for firing him. Alex is on the case and gets to know Maxwell, who […]

Supergirl Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Livewire

The Thanksgiving episode of “Supergirl” aired a week early after the one originally scheduled this week was pulled out of respect to the victims of the terrorist attack in Paris. Dr. Eliza Danvers comes to town, and she isn’t happy about Kara coming out in the public eye as Supergirl. The mom blames the older daughter Alex for this. It wouldn’t be a holiday without some family drama, even ones involving a superhero and undercover agent. A flashback shows Kara as a young girl testing out her flying powers with Alex reluctantly joining her. Later, the parents catch them when […]

Supergirl Season 1 Episode 2 Recap: Stronger Together

In this week’s episode of Supergirl on CBS, Kara (Melissa Benoist) quickly learns that having super powers and being a super hero are two different things. We pick up a week after she revealed herself to National City as Supergirl and she tells us it’s going pretty well. Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) isn’t impressed. He says there are very rigorous requirements to be a field operative for the DEO and right now Kara’s airborne mph isn’t meeting them. She wonders if he’s being so fussy because she’s a … woman? …. nope. An alien. Kara finds herself in a situation those who have extremely […]

“Supergirl” soars with uplifting and fun series premiere

Melissa Benoist proves she is the perfect choice to play Supergirl during the first episode of the CBS series. She’s also the second hero to emerge from the Glee stage. Grant Gustin, who played shifty Sebastian Smythe, has been running with the ball as Barry Allen on The Flash. The new addition to the DC Universe has a similar feel of that CW show, only with a slightly different message. There is a sense of female empowerment when it comes with many characters in “Supergirl.” Namely, girls can rule — and save — the world. We are introduced to our heroine Kara Zor-El (Benoist) as she […]

Supergirl on CBS — Melissa Benoist soars as Greg Berlanti’s latest TV superhero

Arguably, I’m too old and much too fond of PBS to even notice the new CBS dramedy Supergirl. I like Supergirl anyway. I like it a lot. Much of the credit goes to series star Melissa Benoist, who calls upon the same sweet-meets-steely spunk she displayed as Glee’s cheerleader target Marley Rose to play Superman’s equally gifted cousin Kara Zor-El. Yeah, I was probably too old for Glee, too, but I love a good tale about “odd women out” who find their own power — be it in a high-school auditorium or on another planet. And I love that co-executive producer Greg Berlanti (also the […]
