“He Doesn’t Suck”: Bruce Campbell Campaigns For Ash vs Evil Dead Emmy Nomination

Are you ready to make a “terrible but fun decision” this upcoming election season? No, not regarding who you will be voting for as president, but who you would like to see named Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series at this year’s Emmys? Well, Bruce Campbell has a suggestion, as seen in Emmy campaign materials put out by Starz. In campaign videos, Campbell plays homage to his Ash Williams character, as seen in the Evil Dead movies and in the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, by inviting Emmy voters to “make the Emmys groovy” by giving him the nod for his […]

Starz Original Programming Is Moving to Sunday Nights

Do Starz original series like Outlander have what it takes to go up against hugely popular fare like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead? The network thinks so, and is ready to test that confidence out by moving its entire original programming slate from Saturday nights to Sunday nights beginning July 17 with the Season 3 premiere of Power. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter posted online today, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, “We see opportunity. Saturdays have worked so well that we feel our shows are going to be able to stand up on the most watched night of the week.” Albrecht, who was HBO […]

The Dresser — Sir Anthony Hopkins and Sir Ian McKellen shine in Starz original film

The play’s the thing in The Dresser. King Lear, to be exact. And whether — apologies, Hamlet — it is to be or not to be. And a pair of Sirs make Starz’ upcoming film adaptation of the Ronald Harwood play a must-see, whether you’re a Shakespeare lover or not. The Dresser follows Sir (Sir Anthony Hopkins), an embittered, once-famous actor whose star has faded to twilight in a local Shakespeare troupe. As Sir’s anger and despair get the better of him — and World War II rages across England — Sir’s faithful dresser Norman (Sir Ian McKellen) tries to ensure that Lear […]

Soderbergh’s new “The Girlfriend Experience” debuts tonight

Starz’s new steamy thinker The Girlfriend Experience is a reimagining of executive producer Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 film of the same name. The half-hour series stars the daring and beautiful Riley Keough (a.k.a. Elvis’ 26-year-old granddaughter) as Christine Reade, a second-year law student who is drawn into the world of a GFE (a girlfriend experience) or, more simply, a girl for hire who serves the needs of whatever her high-paying clients desire (sex or no sex). Keough describes her character as being somewhat void of emotion. “She’s not into intellectualizing her emotions, as she doesn’t really care about a lot of […]

Flesh and Bone

“Flesh and Bone” on Starz: And you thought “Black Swan” was dark

For all the beauty, grace, skill and artistry of a ballet performance, the dancers themselves are often perceived as hypercompetitive, treacherous, chain-smoking, drug-addled, maladjusted bulimics with gross feet. The new Starz limited drama series Flesh and Bone (Sundays at 8pm ET/PT beginning Nov. 8) probably won’t help change that image. The story centers on Claire (Sarah Hay), a talented dancer who flees a deeply disturbed life in Pittsburgh to join an elite ballet company in New York City. She impresses the director and is chosen as the prima, which draws the ire and envy of her colleagues and the lust and […]

Ash vs Evil Dead Episode 1 recap: “El Jefe”

Happy Halloween, and welcome to our first Ash vs Evil Dead recap. Ash is back, baby! Director Sam Raimi kicked off the series Ash vs Evil Dead in fine form, with his legendary manic camerawork, some references to the Evil Dead films, and plenty of the humor (particularly from Bruce Campbell’s performance) and gore that we’ve come to know and love from the cult classic films. When I talked with Campbell earlier this summer on the set of Ash vs Evil Dead, he told me that the decision to make the series a half-hour one was “in order to keep […]

“A big jolly splatterfest” — Talking “Ash vs Evil Dead” with Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless

It was just past the first day of winter in New Zealand when I arrived at a location called Riverhead, just outside of Auckland, to begin watching the filming of the new Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, which airs Saturdays beginning Oct. 31. Coming from the northern U.S., I didn’t find the weather to be quite what I was used to as “winter.” It was very pleasant: sunny, temps in the high 50s, low 60s Fahrenheit. The nice climate added to the loveliness of the filming location, a scenic pine forest. As a fan of the original Evil Dead […]
