Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards airing on OWN

Almost every year around Oscar nominations time, the question tends to be asked about where the black filmmakers and actors are among the nominees. Women of color in particular seem to be left out of the Oscar conversation on many occasions. I’m not sure if the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards were created as a response to real or perceived snubs from the Academy, but, now in its eighth annual installment, the ceremony does a good job of recognizing top African-American women in the entertainment industry. This year’s ceremony will air in a taped presentation Feb. 21 at 10pm […]

He made history as the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, and while Michael Sam hasn’t yet become the regular player he had hoped to be, and is currently a free agent, his story remains an inspiration, and a new documentary called Michael Sam, debuting tonight at 9pm ET/PT on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, tells that story. Group From “Operation Change” In Matt Nathanson Video

I know several people with hearing loss, so any time I see a link for a video of a person hearing for the first time, I watch. It is amazing and inspiring to witness someone’s joy when experiencing something that I take for granted. Around the world, hearing loss is a sentence to silence; in the developing world, something as simple as a trip to an audiologist is an unaffordable expense. Singer Matt Nathanson traveled with the Starkey Hearing Foundation to give the gift of hearing to impoverished people in Lima, Peru. His experience was recorded and became the music […]
