5 Questions With Meredith MacNeill Of IFC’s “Baroness Von Sketch Show”

If you haven’t caught IFC’s award-winning, late-night satire Baroness von Sketch Show (Wednesdays), you’re missing a good time. Just starting its fourth season, the all-female comedy series features Meredith MacNeill, Carolyn Taylor, Aurora Browne and Jennifer Whalen. MacNeill is the only star who doesn’t hail from a comedy background (her costars are Second City alums), so when she commits to a sketch — oh boy, does she commit. “For me it’s such a fun, fantastic, freeing place to play really close to where it shouldn’t work when you’re pushing it that it does,” she shares on her often over-the-top absurdities. […]

IFC’s “Documentary Now!” is history as it never was

As Comedy Central’s Drunk History revolutionized the way we look at the past, IFC’s Documentary Now! (Thursdays beginning Aug. 20) hopes to alter how we remember some of history’s most important documentary films. Former Saturday Night Live castmates Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers are the creators of this new six-part comedy series that spoofs famous documentaries like Grey Gardens, Nanook of the North and Reportero. Each installment has the appearance and tone of a serious documentary (they even got Helen Mirren to introduce each episode!). But the seriousness ends when Armisen and Hader appear onscreen as parodies of eccentric […]

Funny or Die follows up “The Spoils of Babylon” with “The Spoils Before Dying”

Following up on its pitch-perfect parody of overwrought novels and epic miniseries of days gone by with The Spoils of Babylon, Funny or Die has produced a follow-up comedy miniseries for IFC. The three-night The Spoils Before Dying again features “author” Eric Jonrosh (Will Ferrell, also an executive producer), who introduces his story. It’s a pulp-noir murder mystery set in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles’ jazz scene. Dying follows Rock Banyon (Michael Kenneth Williams) as he becomes the prime suspect in the double murder of his occasional lover Fresno Foxglove (Maya Rudolph), who is found dead with another man. Kristen […]

The Spoils of Babylon: Will Ferrell leads all-star cast in IFC’s absurdist soap opera

The Spoils of Babylon premieres at 10 tonight on IFC. Never heard of Eric Jonrosh? Well, then, you’re missing out on one of the greatest literary minds the 20th century ever produced, a raconteur of prodigious wit that created unforgettable dramas that seared into the psyche and soul of America. At least that’s what The Spoils of Babylon, the wonderfully absurdist new comedy from IFC, would have you believe. Taking aim squarely at those overwrought, bloated miniseries that were staples of the 1980s (think The Thorn Birds, The Winds of War), the six-part — ahem — saga follows the twisted […]

Comedy Bang Bang returns for Season 2 of inspired lunacy on IFC

Comedy Bang! Bang! Fridays beginning July 12 IFC, 10pm ET/PT Maybe it was the Ghoulies joke. I’ll admit to having largely missed out on the first season of Comedy Bang! Bang!, IFC’s free-form send-up of the talk-show genre. Then when I put in the screeners for two episodes of Season 2, with guest stars Andy Samberg and Aziz Ansari, I sat there for a while not too impressed, finding the endless stream of improvised gags feeling at times like a laborious outtake reel — you know, like those ones for Judd Apatow or Will Ferrell movies where you’re shocked at […]
