“Metástasis,” the Latin American adaptation of “Breaking Bad,” to air in U.S. on Univision networks

I’m sure many American fans are still missing Breaking Bad, but they’ll have a chance to watch something similar when Metastasis — a Latin American adaptation of the acclaimed series, set in Colombia — debuts this summer. The premiere will simulcast in the U.S. June 8 on UniMás, Univision, and Galavisión before settling into its regular timeslot at 10pm ET Monday through Friday on UniMás. The plot should be very familiar to Bad fans. Instead of Walter White, the anti-hero here is Walter Blanco (Diego Trujillo), a modest high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Weighing his […]

Betsy Brandt on transitioning from Breaking Bad to The Michael J. Fox Show

Betsy Brandt is enjoying a well-earned glass of wine after a long day of press for her new series The Michael J. Fox Show, having done the same drill just a day before for that other series she’s on. “Don’t let me get drunk or I’ll tell you how Breaking Bad ends!” she quips cheerfully, taking a sip from her glass and settling into a sofa in the lobby bar of a Beverly Hills hotel. I tell her we first met when Breaking Bad began, six years ago on the Bad set as the show filmed its first episodes. At the time, Brandt stretched out […]

Better Call Saul: Breaking Bad spinoff confirmed by AMC

It’s a go — Saul’s got his own show! AMC confirmed today that they have reached a licensing agreement for an hourlong Breaking Bad spinoff series with the working title “Better Call Saul.” But if you think that guarantees that Saul survives whatever’s about to shake out in Breaking Bad‘s final three episodes, well, not so fast. According to the statement: “Plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer.” “Knowing Vince and how seriously he takes the show, he will kill Saul […]

Bob Odenkirk on ‘Breaking Bad’ and a possible Saul Goodman spin-off

Yes, Bob Odenkirk knows you’ve heard the buzz about Better Call Saul, the rumored Breaking Bad spinoff featuring his fan-favorite character, morally flexible, courtroom-averse lawyer Saul Goodman. But if you think those rumors gave Odenkirk an ounce of security that Saul survives the wrath of Walter White in Bad’s Sept. 29 series finale, you’d be, well, dead wrong. “Knowing [showrunner] Vince [Gilligan] and how seriously he takes the show, he will kill Saul if that is what should happen — so you should know that!” says Odenkirk. “He would not hesitate to do that because there is a gossipy story […]

MythBusters Breaking Bad special airs Monday on Discovery

My fellow Breaking Bad fans, have you ever wondered if some of the stuff that teacher-turned-meth-kingpin Walter White and his wayward acolyte Jesse Pinkman get into courtesy of Walt’s weird science could actually happen? Well, the MythBusters team is on the case. But before you get your undies in a bundle fretting about what Bad‘s creator Vince Gilligan might think of the potential whistleblowing, you can relax. It was his idea in the first place. This Monday, Gilligan and Jesse Pinkman himself, Aaron Paul, appear on a special Breaking Bad episode of MythBusters, seeking to dispel viewers’ doubts about two […]

Breaking Bad wins program of year, complete 2013 TCA Award winners list

The Television Critics Association recognized the top programs and actors of the 2012-2013 television season at its 29th Annual TCA Awards at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Saturday. Hosting the invitation-only, non-televised event were Comedy Central’s Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, who rocked the house in character as their famed impersonations of Obama and his anger translator Luther. In addition to the 200-plus membership of U.S. and Canadian TV journalists and critics (not all in attendance), the room was filled with some of TV’s brightest stars who took home honors for their outstanding year in television. Vince Gilligan, Bryan Cranston, […]

Vince Gilligan On The End Of “Breaking Bad” And New Beginnings

In the fall of 2007, I flew to Albuquerque to spend a glorious day with showrunner Vince Gilligan and the cast of Breaking Bad as they filmed Season 1 and wondered what would happen to their daring little series as the writers strike loomed. Five seasons, six years, seven primetime Emmys and countless other accolades later, Gilligan is on the phone chuckling indulgently as I pose overwrought theories about the fate of Walter White and Co. on the eve of Bad’s last eight episodes. For example: about his long-ago promise to turn his lead from Mr. Chips into Scarface culminating […]

New Mexico’s “Breaking Bad” bill becomes law

Yesterday, April 4, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez signed what has become known as her state’s “Breaking Bad” bill into the Breaking Bad Law. Gov. Martinez had originally vetoed the bill a few weeks ago. It is geared toward returning New Mexico’s film and television industry to international competitiveness. The law is named, of course, for the acclaimed and popular AMC drama series Breaking Bad, which has filmed at Albuquerque Studios and attracted a steady stream of accolades for the city of Albuquerque, as well as interest from tourists worldwide. The Breaking Bad Law will increase the state’s rebate for […]
