By Ryan Berenz Follow @ChannelGuideRAB ESPN’s fall documentary series continues on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 8pm ET, with “The Real Rocky,” looking at “The Bayonne Bleeder” Chuck Wepner, a former New Jersey state heavyweight boxing champion, who fought the likes of George Foreman, Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali. But Wepner’s claim to fame, so he says, is that he was the inspiration for Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky character. But Wepner’s career took a bizarre turn as he went on to fight wrestling legend Andre the Giant and even boxed a bear.
By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH Female boxing is a subject not always treated with a lot of respect. In fact, it’s just now getting representation in the Olympics, making its debut at the London 2012 Games. One athlete hoping to be there is Marlen Esparza, who has won six national titles in the United States, and possesses a focus and determination that would rival any competitor in any field. Esparza’s quest for Olympic glory is the subject of In Her Corner: Latino in America, airing Sunday at 8pm on CNN. Soledad O’Brien and her crew followed Esparza for about a […]

It should be no surprise to anyone paying attention that Mike Tyson has finally come to reality TV. The subject of his new show, however, might just sucker-punch you. “The first thing I ever loved in my life was a pigeon,” the ex-boxing champ says. “I don’t know why. … I feel ridiculous trying to explain it. Pigeons are a part of my life. It’s a constant with my sanity in a weird way; this is just what I do. If I’m lucky enough to die an old man, I’m going to have birds.” That’s right, the man who once […]
A friend of mine told me recently that he wasn’t in a hurry to see The Fighter because, frankly, he felt like he’d seen it already. I could hardly blame him. The broad strokes of the story — a down-on-his-luck, mush-mouthed boxer struggles through family strife and hard knocks on his way to glory — fit right into the tired sports-movie template. But thankfully, The Fighter has much more firepower in its arsenal than just the same old jabs. Long a passion project of star Mark Wahlberg, the film tells the real-life story of “Irish” Micky Ward, a determined brawler […]
Usually when we promote a Pay-Per-View boxing event in Channel Guide Magazine, we have an office pool to see who picks the date closest to when the fight gets canceled. (OK, we don’t. But we probably should.) Boxing’s highly anticipated fall schedule has gotten off to a rocky — no pun intended — start. First, the Sept. 15 Fernando Vargas vs. Ricardo Mayorga PPV fight was scrapped when Vargas was found to have anemia. And last Friday, the Sept. 8 “Fireworks” card featuring Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Rocky Juarez got dumped when Marquez developed an infection in a cut on […]
De La Hoya vs. Mayweather: The World Awaits is mere days away. Before these two rivals fight May 5 on Pay-Per-View, they talked with members of the media on a conference call. Check out what these fighters had to say as they fired off salvos in a war of words before their war in the ring. Mayweather Lets Everyone Have It Floyd On Oscar’s Style “He’s extremely stiff. I’m a fighter with special effects. I can do whatever it takes to win, inside and out. … You already know what he’s going to do. He does it time in and […]
This Saturday’s Pay-Per-View fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather is definitely going to be worth the buy, even if the fight doesn’t live up to the hype. Fights of this caliber are rare, so you’ve got to see them when they come around. Both fighters are going to be in great shape, both really dislike each other (read what Oscar and Floyd have to say) and there’s a lot at stake for each of their legacies in the sport. But expecting that this fight is going to save the sport of boxing is silly. This fight will […]
