And so it goes – the latest Hollywood awards season news is out, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Nominations are in for the 20th annual show, and there are some interesting selections. For the sake of full disclosure, I am a voting member of the group that annually hosts the awards, the BFCA (Broadcast Film Critics Association). Hosted by Michael Strahan (the Super Bowl champion, Fox NFL Sunday analyst, and Live! with Kelly and Michael host) the awards will air LIVE on A&E on Jan. 15th at 9pm ET / 6pm PT. As a personal aside … my mom loves […]

A&E tries to cash in with “Country Buck$”

So how many reality shows about country folk who run multimillion-dollar outdoor sporting goods companies can fit on one TV network? A&E thinks at least two, and they’re going to test the theory with Country Buck$, premiering Wednesday, Nov. 19, following Duck Dynasty. Country Buck$ follows the Busbice family, proprietors of Wildgame Innovations, a company that specializes in nutritional supplements and attractants to support quality deer herd management. They also run a sportsman fantasy camp on more than 50,000 acres in Louisiana that also serves as a testing ground for their sporting-goods products in development, the more interesting of which […]

“Duck Dynasty” takes command of Best Redneck Series in the Viewers Voice Awards

There’s just no resisting that Duck call. Duck Dynasty, that is. With Season 7 set to premiere on Nov. 19 and an ever-expanding line of merchandise that features everything from board games to bottled wine, the bearded Robertson men and their lovely ladies continue to command America’s attention. And their countrified reality show handily won our 2014 Viewers Voice Awards for Best Redneck Series, shooting down its closet competition, the ill-fated Honey Boo Boo crew, by nearly 30 percent! Duck Dynasty, A&E 46.7% Call of the Wildman (Turtleman), Animal Planet 17.0% Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, TLC 13.5% Alaskan Bush […]

Big Smo recap Episode 1: “Go Big or Go Home”

I wasn’t sure what to think when the preview screener for A&E’s new reality series Big Smo arrived on my desk. I had been unaware of the genre of music Smo performs — a crossover of country music, Southern rock and hip-hop known as “hick hop” to some people, as Smo tells us in the premiere episode. And following the premiere, I still don’t fully know what his sound is like, as the episode didn’t have too much of Big Smo’s original music in it, except for snippets at the end. We get inklings in the premiere that Smo is […]

Duck Dynasty Season 6 premieres June 11 with special guest Gov. Bobby Jindal

A&E announced to day that Duck Dynasty Season 6 will premiere Wednesday, June 11 at 10/9CT. In the Season 6 premiere episode, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announces that he will stop by the Duck Commander headquarters to present Willie with a special ward.  John Luke volunteers to make an introductory speech, which inspired Willie and Uncle Si to offer up some unsolicited advice. Meanwhile, Miss Kay, Korie and Sadie go shopping for new outfits for the event. Also in the new season of the outspoken and omnipresent Robertson family’s saga, Phil continues to wage war with the beavers on his land, frequently leaving Willie to manage the clan’s multi-million […]

A&E pulls “Those Who Kill” from Monday lineup

This is for all those people come Monday who will be asking what happened to Those Who Kill? Was Those Who Kill canceled? No. No. No! Those Who Kill was NOT canceled. Thankfully. It is, however, being pulled immediately from A&E’s current lineup. After airing just two episodes, A&E has pulled Those Who Kill from its Monday lineup in order to allow executives time to go back and either retool the show and/or its scheduling with plans to relaunch the 10-episode first season at a later date.  It was unknown at this time when and even where – of the […]

Those Who Kill recap: Chloe Sevigny, James D’Arcy in A&E’s new crime thriller

Those Who Kill recap (March 3): Chloë Sevigny and James D’Arcy delve into morally gray areas in their edgy new crime thriller Those Who Kill airing Mondays on A&E beginning March 3. TV is on a gruesomely dark killing spree of late with series like The Blacklist, The Following and The Returned. Now A&E jumps into the serial killer genre with its 10-episode thriller Those Who Kill. Based on the Danish crime series of the same name (you’ll recall The Killing was also a Danish TV translation and success), this series is set in Pittsburgh and follows the work of […]

Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga return in Bates Motel Season 2

Season 1 of Bates Motel ended with a shocker, the murder of young Norman Bates’ (Freddie Highmore) caring teacher, Miss Watson. The implication was that Norman had offed her during one of his creepy blackouts, and while that very well may prove true, audiences have seen with this twisty Psycho prequel — returning for Season 2 on A&E March 3 — that what sometimes seems certain may not be the case at all. “What I like about the show is that it’s suggestive as opposed to conclusive,” Highmore says. “I think that intrigue keeps it interesting. People aren’t too sure […]

Interview with Andrew Mayne of “Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne,” new A&E series

Magician Andrew Mayne helps people get even using magic in his humorous “OMG, how did he do that” series Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne. In our interview with Andrew Mayne, the prankster didn’t reveal his secrets but did give us insights on his 13-episode new series that debuts Monday, Jan. 13 at 10pm. Mayne uses his in-your-face, man-on-the-street magic style to punk unsuspecting wrongdoers with hilarious results. Consider the series a little bit Punk’d mixed with a little bit Penn & Teller. “I’m very sneaky,” Mayne says about his craft. “I go about this in a way that I don’t advertise […]

Duck Dynasty Season 5: 5 Things You Need To Know

Don’t know about you, but Dec. 11, when the Duck Dynasty Christmas special aired, sure seems like a long time ago. Since then the show that just about everybody and their grandma could agree was a bright spot in the dark cloud that is reality TV has undergone quite a transformation. Phil Robertson’s comments in a GQ profile regarding his thoughts on homosexuality and the effect of the civil rights movement on African-Americans turned A&E’s biggest show into a lightning rod of controversy. Suspensions, boycotts, protests, calls for protests and extreme levels of righteous indignation on both sides has threatened […]
