Supergirl on CBS — Melissa Benoist soars as Greg Berlanti’s latest TV superhero

Arguably, I’m too old and much too fond of PBS to even notice the new CBS dramedy Supergirl. I like Supergirl anyway. I like it a lot. Much of the credit goes to series star Melissa Benoist, who calls upon the same sweet-meets-steely spunk she displayed as Glee’s cheerleader target Marley Rose to play Superman’s equally gifted cousin Kara Zor-El. Yeah, I was probably too old for Glee, too, but I love a good tale about “odd women out” who find their own power — be it in a high-school auditorium or on another planet. And I love that co-executive producer Greg Berlanti (also the […]

“The Last Kingdom”: Violence, revenge, intrigue and the birth of England

BBC America’s new eight-part drama The Last Kingdom will appeal to Game of Thrones fans, though the former lacks dragons, effective sorcery and the (likely) resurrection of dead primary characters. Based on a historical fiction book series by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom is set in ninth-century England. At the center of the story is Uhtred, a Saxon who was captured as a boy and raised into a man by Danish invaders. Amid waves of violence, revenge and intrigue, Uhtred’s loyalties are tested on his quest to reclaim his birthright. The journey will lead him to join King Alfred in […]

MLB baseball playoffs 2015 TV schedule and preview

Go here for updated 2016 MLB playoffs TV schedules! A handful of Major League Baseball teams who’ve grown accustomed to starting their offseasons in October will have to change their plans this year. You won’t hear any complaining. With the longest current playoff drought, the Toronto Blue Jays have their first trip to the postseason since they won consecutive World Series in 1992-93. The resurgent Houston Astros will reach the playoffs for the first time since losing the 2005 World Series. Avoiding the epic September collapses of 2007-08, the New York Mets will see their first playoff action since 2006. […]

Lifetime bows ‘Unauthorized’ Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210 films this month

Though August’s The Unauthorized Full House Story drew only tepid ratings as Full House fans eagerly await a more genial return to clan Tanner in Netflix’s upcoming Fuller House, Lifetime has given two popular ’90s nighttime soaps the same kitschy teleflick treatment. The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story  and The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story bow on back-t0-back Saturdays this month and feature The Simpsons‘ Dan Castellaneta as uber-producer Aaron Spelling (see below). According to the network, The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story “will show the roller-coaster ride of the program’s first four seasons, highlighting the drama between cast members and producers both on and off […]

The Walking Dead — Who’s Friend, Who’s Foe In (And Out Of) Alexandria In Season 6?

The wait is almost over, Walking Dead-heads. And when we left the residents of Alexandria, upheaval was the order of the day. As Rick and Deanna continued to circle each other for control (and the moral mindset) of the community, loose cannon Dr. Pete slit the throat of Deanna’s docile husband and Rick shot him dead on the spot. Right in front of the newly arrived (and newly zen) Morgan, who showed up with Daryl and Aaron, all three having made chilling discoveries outside the gate. Executive producer and zombie master Greg Nicotero promises a Season 6 opener of The […]

Ken Jeong gives us the prognosis on ABC’s “Dr. Ken”

Perhaps your first, um, exposure to the work of Ken Jeong came in The Hangover, when he, as the flamboyant gangster Mr. Chow, pounced out of a car’s trunk wearing nothing but socks. A select audience knows Jeong as Spanish instructor Señor Chang on Community. Still others may know Jeong as the doctor who gave them an annual physical exam. WHAT? Yes, Jeong is also a real-life physician (he keeps his medical license current during his screen career), and he’s the leading man in ABC’s sitcom Dr. Ken (premiering Friday, Oct. 2, at 8:30pm ET/PT), loosely based on his professional […]
