ID brings back daytime “soap” block, featuring soap stars past and present

Once more trying to prove that reality can be more unbelievable than even the most ridiculous soap opera plotline, Investigation Discovery (ID) is tying the two themes together for the return of its “soap” block of programming. This daytime stunt will air 1-4pm ET daily for four weeks, beginning Aug. 25. Soap stars from past and present will host the programming blocks, which feature encore showings of ID series like Wives With Knives, My Dirty Little Secret and others. Investigation Discovery’s Heartbreakers unites long-ago TV teen hearthrobs in killer true tales

For TV viewers of a certain age, the idea of a brand-new show featuring The Brady Bunch’s Peter Brady and Melrose Place‘s Jack Parezi battling for the love of Growing Pains wallflower Carol Seaver could possibly blow your mind. But it’s about to go down. On Aug. 13, Investigation Discovery — ground zero for unabashedly campy TV that blends fact and fiction into lesson after lesson in what to avoid in a prospective life partner — will premiere the three-part summer series Heartbreakers, starring the aforementioned trio, Christopher Knight, Antonio Sabato Jr. and Tracy Gold, plus additional throwback faves Kevin […]

We talk Devious Maids with the show’s own Evelyn Powell, Rebecca Wisocky

When Marc Cherry was penning the first season of his Lifetime hit, Devious Maids, he knew he was creating a twisty storyline and complex characters that would leave viewers and the network often wondering what exactly he was up to. The one thing he never doubted? The appeal of Evelyn and Adrian Powell, the wickedly funny, super-secretive society couple whose lives were long ago shattered by tragedy. “One of the things I did foresee was how much everyone would come to love the character of Evelyn Powell because I knew she and Adrian had this twisted household, but they are […]

7 Questions with Susan Lucci

It’s tempting to think that having spent four decades embodying  All My Children‘s unforgettable Erica Kane — earning critical acclaim and worldwide fame in the process — Susan Lucci would be content to relax and enjoy the spoils of her success when the show ended in 2011. Instead, the passionate and thoroughly charming actress went right out and landed herself a new role that’s every bit as delicious as Ms. Kane in Genevieve Delatour, the fallen (and funny!) socialite on Marc Cherry’s Devious Maids, now airing its second Season on Lifetime. “When All My Children was no longer on ABC […]

Devious Maids Season 2: Marc Cherry, Susan Lucci and Judy Reyes talk the tidy success of Lifetime’s sensational soap

Devious Maids is cleaning up for Lifetime. The deliciously soapy nighttime drama, created by Desperate Housewives scribe Marc Cherry and co-executive produced by Eva Longoria, defied ABC’s rejection and early concerns about racial stereotyping to become the network’s fastest-growing scripted series ever, thanks in large part to a devoted tribe of fans who call themselves the Devious Army. “We understood that we were treading precarious waters doing a show about maids with all Latinas,” says Judy Reyes, who plays controlling mom and maid Zoila Diaz. “But we all knew that it was a moment to seize, because it was something […]

“General Hospital” February sweeps storylines

ABC announced some of the storylines that will be airing on its daytime drama General Hospital in February 2014. GH has been doing well in the ratings lately, and it most recently featured Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy) in a bit of stunt casting, but these February sweeps storylines look geared to pump up that viewership in an even stronger way. In February, the long-running soap opera — which celebrated 50 years on the air last year — will also be airing its 13,000th episode. General Hospital February Sweeps Storylines (descriptions from ABC): Feb. 5: Guest star Shirley Jones plays a […]

“The Haves and the Have Nots” star Jaclyn Betham calls Amanda a little crazy this season

Providing much of the drama in Season 2 of Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots is Jaclyn Betham, who plays Amanda Cryer in OWN’s top-rated drama that airs Tuesdays at 9pm ET. This season of The Haves and the Have Nots finds the once-fragile Amanda in full-out beast mode looking to extract revenge on all who have wronged her. “She’s coming out of her shell in more dark ways than others, for sure, she’s not as introverted,” Betham says of her character. “She does seek her revenge. I think people are going to be really shocked this season […]

SOAPnet going off the air at end of 2013

Like many a soap opera storyline, the saga of SOAPnet’s ultimate fate has been stretched out for a long time now, with many fans of the channel wondering, “When is SOAPnet going off the air?” ever since word started in 2011 that the network would be ending and making way for Disney Junior. ABC has confirmed with us that SOAPnet will be ending at the end of 2013, and it doesn’t seem likely to pull the “back from the dead” maneuver that so many characters in soap history have managed. “SOAPnet goes off the air at 11:59pm Dec 31st” read […]

NBC announces next Day of Days “Days of our Lives” fan event

Soap operas have fallen on hard times in recent years, with some notable, long-running ones being canceled after decades on the air. NBC’s sole survivor in the genre, Days of our Lives, continues to maintain its viewership, however (it recently delivered its biggest one-week overall audience in four years), and in recognition of its fans, the series will again be holding a “Day of Days” fan event, featuring several stars from the daytime drama. (With the ever-increasing possibility of a soap’s cancelation, events such as this, where stars connect and maintain bonds with fans, might prove to become even more important […]

“All My Children” and “One Life to Live” to start a 10-week run on OWN

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced today that it has acquired the first 40 episodes of The OnLine Network‘s reprisal of the daytime dramas All My Children and One Life to Live. The popular dramas started up production again this year — online — after ending their runs on ABC in 2011 and 2012, respectively.  OWN’s airings give viewers a chance to see episodes on more traditional TV during what the network is billing a “special exclusive 10-week limited engagement” beginning July 15. “These shows have proven to be very popular with a significant, loyal fan base, not to mention Oprah […]
