TV Has Its Place: Michael Jackson’s Impact On TV

A lot is being written about Michael Jackson and will be for days to come, no doubt. Much of it will be deserved praise, much will be analysis of his often strange and sometimes too-public life. But as soon as the news broke, radio stations across the country began playing his music in tribute, and MTV somewhat reverted to its original format, breaking up its programming day to put his videos back in rotation. I’ve never been a big fan of Jackson’s music, but I would be among the first to agree with what the media has been saying […]

Ryan Murphy Fills FOX With “Glee”

Ryan Murphy, creator of Nip/Tuck and Popular, is back with a new series, and it looks to be another winner. But with Glee — making a sneak preview debut May 19 after the final performance show of this season’s American Idol, then returning to air regularly in the fall — don’t look for the same of what made those first two shows hits. “I’ve done sort of eight years of darkness and really adult stuff [with Nip/Tuck],” Murphy recently told reporters on a conference call, “and I was like, ‘Okay, I want to try something different. I want to do […]

Five Fabulous Flicks (Plus One)

Start the weekend — and next week — right with these films airing May 9-15. All times ET. (As  you can guess, we film buffs are having a bit of trouble sticking to just 5) Ray (2004) Music biopics frequently follow a well-traveled arc: Musician of humble origins gets discovered, bringing on the problem trappings of fame and fortune, and a descent into a maelstrom of drug and drink. Ray doesn’t stray far from the script, but Jamie Foxx’s Academy Award-winning performance as the late Ray Charles make this a standout effort. FX, May 9, 8pm

TV Has Its Place: On HBO’s Forthcoming Series “Treme”

by Karl J. Paloucek Now here’s an appealing and relevant idea for a new series: According to Variety, HBO has given the green light to a new series called Treme, named after the New Orleans district in which it’s set. The main characters, including various musicians and a restaurateur, try to rebuild their lives in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation. Executive produced by David Simon (The Wire) and Eric Overmyer (Law & Order franchises, The Wire), the series is being considered for release in spring 2010. This is an encouraging sign, as I see it. I’m sure I’m far […]
