Jonas Brothers Get Funny In A New Disney Channel Series

By Barb Oates The Monkees meets Flight of the Conchords? That’s how Disney Channel president Gary Marsh is describing its latest venture with the Jonas Brothers – a scripted comedy series titled JONAS, premiering Saturdays, beginning May 2. “What we’ve tried to do with JONAS is create a fusion of a sitcom and a music video and use original Jonas Brothers songs as the foundation to glue it together,” Marsh says.

Nickelodeon Unifies Its Branding, Kids!

by Karl J. Paloucek Hey, kids! Literally — all of you Nickelodeon fans, listen up. As it enters its 30th year devoted to bringing programming for kids, Nickelodeon is making a few bold moves and changes to its brand. Namely, first of all, the brand is re-christening some of its networks and website offshoots to bring all of them more firmly under the Nickelodeon umbrella. Here’s how it’s all gonna go down: Noggin will become Nick Jr: The preschool set need not fear, their wee li’l shows are staying put. Only the name will change. The N will become TEENick: […]

Disney Channel Back At “School” With Fourth “HSM”

By RabbitEars As one of my colleagues has said here regularly about One Tree Hill, “the slippery slope never ends” for certain franchises with proven staying power among the younger set. And nothing has been as big in recent years as Disney’s High School Musical series of films. The soundtrack to the first film was the No. 1 album of 2006, and the DVD of the movie was the No. 1 TV movie on DVD. Even more astounding to me, High School Musical 2 became — and remains — the No. 1 basic cable telecast of all time. The third […]

“Sesame Street” Helps Military Families Adjust

By Stacey Harrison Nothing can give a child back the time lost with a parent during a military deployment. And when that parent comes back with injuries, it’s hard to understand that the family’s life will never be the same. But having your favorite Muppet by your side sure helps. That’s the theory behind Coming Home: Military Families Cope With Change, a prime-time Sesame Street special that premieres April 1 on PBS (HD). It’s part of the Sesame Workshop’s Talk, Listen, Connect initiative dedicated to helping military families. Featuring furry friends Elmo and Rosita, along with such non-monster types as […]

Nickelodeon Puts Decision 2009 In Kids’ Hands

Posted by: kjpaloucek Yeah, the Grammys are this weekend and the Oscars are coming up, but the kids don’t care about them — the stuff they like never wins, anyway. Fortunately for them, Nickelodeon’s 22nd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards nominations are out, and starting March 2, kids will be able to go online at nick.com/kca and pick their favorites. The Kids’ Choice Awards is always a pretty messy affair, with lots of Nickelodeon’s patented green slime. (It’s a secret recipe. I asked.) And it’s usually a pretty fun gig for the host as well. In recent years, Justin Timberlake and […]

Black History Month 2009 Is HERE

Posted by: kjpaloucek Unless you’re living under a rock, you should be aware that Black History Month has a bit more to celebrate this year than in previous years. Thankfully, that means that there’s a bit more to look forward to in terms of meaningful Black History Month-themed programming on TV … because, frankly, we know — things had been getting a little wanting during February. (An explicit reminder to network programmers: Slotting repeated showings of Pootie Tang is not only NOT acceptable Black History Month programming, it diminishes the dignity of the occasion.) Here’s an overview of some the […]

Crushin’ on Nickelodeon

Posted By RabbitEars Isn’t it romantic? Well, not to me, personally, but I’m sure plenty of teeny- and tweeny-boppers will be crushing on Nickelodeon’s “Crush Night” programming event, airing Feb. 7, the week before Valentine’s Day, from 8-9:30pm ET/PT. Pop idol David Archuleta and iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove co-host the event, which celebrates teen romance with songs (Archuleta performs his current hit “Crush”) and the premieres of some new episodes of hot Nick shows. First up, Archuleta plays himself in “iRocked the Vote,” a new episode of iCarly, as a contestant on an American Idol-like singing competition series who gets […]
