Season premiere of “The Walking Dead” expands, as well as AMC’s original programming slate

by Karl J. Paloucek Follow @ChannelGuide Well, AMC may be having to sit on production of Mad Men for the moment, but that hasn’t stopped the network from broadening its assets. Today, AMC announced that another of its ambitious series, The Walking Dead, will commence its 13-episode Season 2 with a special 90-minute premiere Oct. 16 as the start of its annual two-week Fearfest celebration. More spectacularly, AMC has also announced the greenlighting of two new original series. Both are still only provisionally titled, but are as conceptually compelling as anything the network has dished out so far, from Breaking […]

AMC’s statement on Frank Darabont and “The Walking Dead”

This morning, AMC released this statement on Frank Darabont stepping down as showrunner for the hit series The Walking Dead, and answered some other questions about possible changes and replacements: “The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara, writer and executive producer, is expanding his responsibilities to assume the role of showrunner. AMC is grateful to executive producer, writer and pilot director Frank Darabont whose contributions to the success of The Walking Dead are innumerable.  We continue to discuss his ongoing role with the series. Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead graphic novels, executive producer and writer on the series, will remain […]

More Comic Book-Based Series Are Coming To The Small Screen

With The Green Hornet making its On Demand premiere this month, it got us thinking about the strides the comic book genre has made as of late. Now a fixture on the big screen, with summer blockbusters increasingly ratcheting up the spandex quotient, comic books have also permeated television and just about every other medium of entertainment. Take Green Hornet, for example. The feature film is just the latest incarnation of a character that has been around since the 1930s when it premiered as a popular radio drama. From there, it found success as a comic book, a film serial, […]

AMC pumps life into zombie genre with “The Walking Dead”

By Stacey Harrison Let’s face it, the words “zombie apocalypse” aren’t often associated with quality drama. Despite the respect paid to the works of Night of the Living Dead auteur George A. Romero, who never fails to infuse sharp social commentary and allegory into the genre he essentially created, it’s more often than not the terrain for hackneyed horror flicks filled with excessive gore and scantily clad coeds. For every Dawn of the Dead that brings credibility, there’s a Zombie Strippers lurking to take it all away. As for its TV prospects, the horror genre overall has not gained much […]

Review: AMC’s “The Walking Dead”

By Stacey Harrison The Walking Dead is a zombie show for folks who wouldn’t be caught dead watching a zombie show. AMC, the network of Mad Men and Breaking Bad, isn’t slumming with this handsomely produced, well-written grotesquerie based on the Robert Kirkman comic-book series. On the contrary, they’ve taken the zombie genre — which usually makes its hay with clever social commentary and wry satire — and made it the subject of heartfelt drama and relentless thrills. With writing and production help from Frank Darabont, who also directed the pilot, the humanity of the characters and the hopelessness of […]

AMC, Darabont team up for “Walking Dead” series

Frank Darabont is delving back into the horror genre, but this time Stephen King is nowhere in sight. Having made his bones adapting some of the scare master’s most respected work (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist), Darabont will serve as writer, director and executive producer of a new series for AMC based on The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic book series about survivors of a zombie apocalypse. “Robert Kirkman has created a world in The Walking Dead with real characters, real human emotion, and great stories that paint a very smart, sophisticated, and layered picture. In […]

“Digging” Josh Bernstein

When a series on The History Channel spawns its own comic book, you know that the times, they are a-changing. With Digging for the Truth and host-turned-comic-hero Josh Bernstein, the network has proved that history can be hip. Beyond the obvious comparisons to Indiana Jones and his rugged good looks, Bernstein is the real deal when it comes to smarts about “stones and bones.” A survivalist expert and graduate of Cornell University, Bernstein logged more than 100,000 miles during Digging‘s first season, and is in the process of upping that number in Season 2. “This time [I visited] 21 countries, […]
