Recap: Grimm Season 4 episode 14 “Bad Luck” — “Rabbit, Run!”

Juliet and Nick can’t seem to catch a break. Between her finding out about his secret life and then getting involved in that secret life – e.g. having her memory erased by a cat, having to trade places with Adalind etc., – and now, when things finally seem like they’ve reached equilibrium, the scales get tipped.. After last episode’s much-needed ass whupping of Adalind, poor Juliette barely gets time to breathe (and maybe gloat a bit) before Nick comes home. In the interest of full disclosure (something neither she nor Nick seem particularly good at, or even inclined towards) and […]

Recap: The Walking Dead Season 5 episode 14 “Spend” — You should have listened …

After two weeks of outward calm – inward, things were anything but – we get to see life in sleepy Alexandria begin its rapid downward spiral. We knew Alexandria was too good to be true and this wasn’t going to last, but things escalate at a pace I wasn’t quite prepared for. This show did remind us why we have stuck with our characters through all this – when they’re not being paranoid, battle scarred freaks, they do the right thing. Something that can’t be said for everyone in Alexandria… . Morning in Alexandria looks, with the exception of the […]

Battle Creek recap: “Syrupticious”

After last week’s whiz bang introduction to the BCPD and FBI wunderkind Milt Chamberlain (Josh Duhamel) and an incredibly convoluted double homicide by a Pizza Guy, this week — thankfully — the pace slows a bit. The case is much clearer and more simply drawn, giving the characters a little more room to breathe, while maintaining its off-center take on the police procedural. It’s a rainy night in Battle Creek. Russ (Dean Winters) catches Holly (Aubrey Dollar) refilling their 5-gallon water jug at the fountain – the snack budget has been cut and staff has been burning through water to […]

The Walking Dead recap Season 5 episode 13 “Forget”: Super uncomfortable cocktail party!

On this week’s The Walking Dead, the group begins to settle into their new home and it’s clear that some of are having more trouble than others adjusting to domestic life. A bookend episode to last week, we see the team settling in — or not — and we get a good look at how life in the wild has taken its toll. The episode opens at night. We see a series of family photos, smiling people from before the cataclysm intercut with images of Sasha laying down and looking at them. She is unable to sleep. The next morning Sasha is […]

Battle Creek episode 1 recap “The Battle Creek Way”

Battle Creek, Michigan has fallen on hard times and and the Police Department is feeling the pinch. But they’re about to be blessed with a savior and not everybody’s happy about that. CBS’ new drama, from Breaking Bad‘s Vince Gilligan and House‘s David Shore, opens on a play — young children in a variety of nature costumes are putting on an adorable show for an auditorium full of parents. A shadowy figure emerges from the back, approaches a man videotaping the play. He flashes a badge and grabs the camera. A small car hurtles around a corner and pulls up […]

The Walking Dead recap Season 5 episode 12: “Remember”

It’s not hard to see The Walking Dead as an extended metaphor for war and the problems that arise when a person (or a group of people) has been fighting for too long and now returns to the home front, so to speak. We can also see this episode — or story arc — as an extended riff on The Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai: a band of hardened fighters is hired to protect simple townsfolk who aren’t prepared to deal with the badness that surrounds them, and what happens when that hardness comes into contact with “civilization.” While the episode is […]

The Walking Dead Season 5 episode 11 recap “The Distance” — People Like Us

I have often been hard pressed to explain, or even understand, why such a bleak, brutal and often hopeless show is so damn popular, and after tonight’s episode, I think I know what it is: Stockholm Syndrome. There really is no other show on television that plays with us, we’re like a cat chasing a laser pointer. What other show can take surviving a tornado and make it feel tiring? What other show can make you afraid of bottled water? What other show can make you fear a well-scrubbed, clean-cut stranger and still keep you on board? After last week’s […]

Grimm recap: “Trial by Fire”

Conflict is at the heart of every drama and Grimm is a show that works best when its characters struggle moves beyond the “I’m going to punch a monster this week” and digs into more historical and personal territory. It also helps to have a good fight, because Grimm is still about punching some monsters. This week’s episode gives us all that and more and has some fun with a character over which I was beginning to despair. Let’s recap shall we? The cold open begins with a hot lava monster and two naughty kids just trying to have some […]
