Dance Moms Season 4 episode 19 recap: A tale of two snitties

Welcome to the second half of Dance Moms Season 4, Dance Moms nation. Remember that team Abby was building in the front half of the Season? They’re baaa-aaack! After winning the final competition, the “new” team has returned to keep things, uh, interesting. The original team is feeling understandably nervous, but Abby hopes having in-house competition will push the Pitt Crew to perform better this season. We kick off with a quick and unsurprising pyramid. Maddie has been unseated from the top spot for refusing to lead the new team in last season’s finale and Chloe secured herself the honor […]

The Last Ship Episode 6: Where Have All the Calm Men Gone?

As we fade in on “Lockdown,” Episode 6 of TNT’s The Last Ship, the music clues us in that things on the ship are tense as we scan past angry, tense faces. A comms officer mentions that people are frustrated that they can’t communicate with the outside world. The ship’s officers discuss over dinner the impact of keeping last week’s events in Nicaragua on the crew and decide that trust is necessary for them to continue on with enough time for Rachel to make the vaccine and safely deliver it. The Captain makes a ship-wide announcement that we’re headed home to the U.S. and that […]

The Last Ship recap episode 5: ‘El Toro’

As we begin episode 5 of TNT’s The Last Ship, our intrepid crew has landed safely on a tropical island and the ship still needs repairs, but the good Doctor Scott and her partner are collecting monkeys to begin testing a vaccine for the virus. Love is in the air as former Gitmo guard and new crewman, Tex, begins flirting with Dr. Scott and tries to coax her out of solitude and encourage her to bond with the rest of the crew. Turns out there’s too much unrest in Costa Rica to get safe passage into the jungle via dry […]

The Last Ship Episode 4 recap: “We’ll Get There”

Episode 4 of The Last Ship, “We’ll Get There,” opens with a happy flashback of Captain Tom’s happy family, reminding us that there was a world before the apocalypse. It’s a nice moment and very humanizing for our intrepid captain followed by a heartbreaking scene in which the XO reveals how much he’s struggling with the news of his son’s death. Rachel needs Quincy to do Super Important Science Stuff but he’s furious with her (recap: his family is probably dead because they wouldn’t turn Earth’s only hope over to a group of renegade Russians) and they have a huge fight. […]

The Last Ship episode 3 recap: I Wonder if He’s the Bad Guy?

Episode 3 of TNT’s The Last Ship grabs last episode’s cliff hanger and keeps on being underwhelming. Three episodes in, The Last Ship has started suffering from a lack of character development and although the pacing of this episode was significantly better, the tensions were empty of emotion or any real investment in the characters. We finally meet the Russians who have been chasing our ship since the Arctic and learn the reason for Dr. Tophet’s treason, which is great. The romantic subplot was less great, however, and more infuriating. Trapped in the harbor Guantanamo, this could have been a […]

The Last Ship Episode 2 recap: Who Let the Doc Out?

If the first episode of Michael Bay’s The Last Ship was a picture-perfect Subway-commercial sub, the second episode was more like what you actually get at Subway: a lackluster sandwich made by a sullen teenager that still manages to taste better for you than most other fast food. • RELATED: The Last Ship premiere recap: “Is the Dog Dead Yet? “Welcome to Gitmo” failed to deliver on the drive of the first episode, seemed to lose the plot about halfway through, and then snapped itself back together in the last thirty seconds. I still have hope for the rest of […]

Orange is the New Black recap Season 2 episode 8-9

As the season revs up for the finale, the next three episodes throw big secrets into the light. From infidelity to prison contraband, no hidden truth is safe. Is the prison ready for the fallout? Episode 8: Appropriately Sized Pots (AKA The Guards Get Tough) Facing pressure from Fig on rule enforcement and stopping contraband, Caputo installs a shot quota for the guards. Controlling contraband won’t be easy, though, considering an all-out war is raging between Vee and Red for inmates’ allegiance. Vee is running cigarettes through the custodial team and making bank on the outside by charging stamps while […]

Falling Skies Season 4 premiere recap: ‘Ghost in the Machine’

TNT’s Falling Skies is back with a big set up for a big Season 4. We meet what’s left of the Second Mass just as it crests the hill overlooking Charleston after weeks of marching to make it home from the aftermath of the third season. The Mason family’s still together and happily secure in their familiarity. Ben (Connor Jessup) is still superhumanly strong, Matt (Maxim Knight) is small but determined, Hal and Maggie (Drew Roy, Sarah Carter) still have relationship problems, and Tom and Anne (Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood) are still precious. Also, baby Lexi is still growing too fast […]

The Last Ship recap: ‘Is the Dog Dead Yet?’

It’s hard for me to discuss Michael Bay without suffering flashbacks to the brain-meltingly awful six hours that comprised the Transformers trilogy, but if The Last Ship can maintain the momentum it’s built up in its first episode, I might just change my tune. The premiere featured all the explosions Bay could fit in without blowing the season’s entire special effects budget and gratuitous shots of decaying corpses, but also human feeling and reactions to the horrors of a world-gone-missing to keep prevent it from feeling overwrought. Although far from a perfect episode of television, Phase Six was a promising start […]

‘Orange is the New Black’ Season 2 recap episodes 5-7

Still bingeing away at Orange is the New Black Season 2 and I am loving every minute of it. The individual stories we love are all there and the show’s increasing focus on characters who are not Piper (Taylor Schilling) is alright by me. I have nothing against Piper, but the fresh perspectives have been great and the increasing focus on life in the system — rather than life passing through it — gives the show an entirely new feeling. As we coast into the middle of the season, tension between the ever-polarizing groups grows and, like the housing market […]
