The NHL playoffs begin tonight on Food Network Versus, and I was afraid I was going to have to pay attention. Fortunately, the NFL had its annual schedule release orgy on NFL Network today, so I can now focus on Chicago Bears Ws instead of the impending Detroit Red Wings first-round playoff L. The widely publicized and criticized exclusive deal between Major League Baseball and DirecTV is exclusive no more, as MLB decided to cut cable companies in on the action last night. Hooray for John Kerry! Perhaps now he can get back to whatever it is that he should be doing. When asked what the PGA Tour hopes to accomplish by instituting a new playoff format for 2007, Nick Faldo’s tell-it-like-it-is style is evident. “It’s all [TV] ratings, isn’t it?” the six-time major tournament champion and current golf TV analyst says. “And obviously they’re competing against football at the end of the season.” Taking a cue from NASCAR’s playoff system, the PGA will try to end its season with a cheer instead of a polite whisper. David Cross, the actor and comedian best known for HBO’s hilarious variety show Mr. Show With Bob and David and FOX’s brilliant-but-canceled Arrested Development, takes on a new TV project with the Oct. 4 Comedy Central premiere of Freak Show, an animated comedy he co-created with H. Jon Benjamin (Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist).
