“The Office” recap: The Meeting

Michael begins this week’s episode by calling Oscar into his office and asking his advice — as a gay man —about going in for a colonoscopy. After that, it’s easy to see why someone wouldn’t want to invite him to a meeting, so it’s no surprise that Jim has done his best to keep him out of a closed-door session with David Wallace. Upset that he has been excluded, Michael begins to worry that David is taking to Jim about replacing him as branch manager — which he is. But what Michael doesn’t realize is that it’s all part of […]

The music of “Glee”: Preggers

The fourth episode of Glee — which, by the way, has been picked up for a full season by FOX — didn’t provide much in the way of performances. We got a dance number, a snippet of a Celine Dion song (that is actually a Platinum Weird song) and an admittedly sharp version of a West Side Story number. But still we go on. We’ll start with Rachel’s take on “Taking Chances,” a song originally done by American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi and Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart in the band Platinum Weird, then done more successfully by Celine Dion.

“How I Met Your Mother” Recap: Definitions

By Mike Frey Synopsis: Two big events are taking place as we catch up with the HIMYM gang: Ted’s first day of school and “the talk.” Well, the first one’s happening. After dating all summer, Barney and Robin tried to have the talk but the talk sucks. While they’re fine with putting it off, Lily isn’t. She tries everything she can to force them into defining their relationship. When even a date between Robin and Brad — and a Kiss Cam punch by a jealous and very overmatched Barney — fails to do the trick, she locks them in a […]

“The Office” recap: Gossip

Since Michael Scott begins Season 6 doing parkour — “the Internet sensation of 2004” — with Dwight and Andy, it’s no surprise to find out that he’s behind the curve on another pop-culture phenomenon: gossip. As the Scranton branch’s summer interns complete their last day at Dunder Mifflin, a rumor spreads that two of the three are dating each other. (Their names aren’t important, so we’ll just call them Jet Li, Julia Stiles and Alan Thicke based on their almost unnoticeable resemblance to those actors.) Everyone knows about it except Michael, who feels left out — that is, until he […]

The music of “Glee”: Acafellas

Last night’s episode of Glee brought three new musical performances and we’re going to examine each one to see what worked and what didn’t. (If you don’t want to take our word for it, all three performances can be seen in the full episode video that appears at the end of this post.) We start with the original lineup of Acafellas doing “Poison” by Bell Biv Devoe (aka BBD, as in “Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD: East Coast Family”). First of all, who doesn’t love this song, at least ironically? That said, the performance — outside of the boy-band swagger […]

Jessalyn Gilsig is happy to be a part of “Glee”

By Mike Glee is mainly about being part of something great, which is the goal that brings together a band of McKinley High castoffs in the school’s glee club, New Directions. Under the guidance of optimistic teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), New Directions hopes to reach nationals and restore the glory of glee club at McKinley. Armed with a budding ingénue in social pariah Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) and a secret weapon in football star Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), the group might just be able to accomplish their goal despite overwhelming odds and low expectations. A sneak preview of the […]

“The Superstars” Recap: Season Finale

By Mike After a week off due to an apparently very important rerun of The Bachelorette, we’re back with The Superstars season finale. Only three teams — and two legitimate contenders — are left. (Seriously, there’s no way Lisa Leslie and David Charvet win this thing, right?) There are three events this week, including a rubber match, before the top two teams advance to a winner-takes-all run through the Obstacle Course. We begin with the Kayak Pursuit, a race in which the three teams paddle their way around a triangle after each starting at a different point. The first team […]

“The Superstars” Recap: Week 5

By Mike With Jeff Kent and Ali Landry being sent home (for the second straight week) last time, there’s just one more team to be whittled away before the finals next week. Our money’s on Lisa Leslie and David Charvet, who seem to be in jeopardy every single week. Their luck has to run out sometime, right? There’s a tweak to the format this week, as the teams will compete in three events instead of two to determine who ends up on the obstacle course. That’s good news, since the other option would have been to cram the show with […]

“The Superstars” Recap: Week 4

By Mike Last week, we said goodbye to Jeff Kent and Ali Landry. This week we say hello to Jeff Kent and Ali Landry. It seems that Terrell Owens has been spreading himself too thin between his commitments to The Superstars, his VH1 reality show (The T.O. Show, premiering July 20) and that small matter of playing NFL football with the Buffalo Bills. He withdraws from the competition, which means he and Joanna Krupa are out of the competition. To the surprise of no one, Joanna is pissed and she questions T.O.’s ability to be a good teammate. Then again, […]

“The Superstars” Recap: Week 3

By Mike We’re down to six teams as Week 3 action begins. And it begins with an event destined to make some of the athletes and celebrities look a little bit foolish — the Lagoon Swim. Some people simply are not strong swimmers. Unfortunately for teammates Terrell Owens and Joanna Krupa, that’s one of the few things they have in common. Brandi Chastain isn’t so great, either, but at least she’s paired with Julio Iglesias Jr., who moves as fast in the water as T.O. does on the football field. Other standouts in this event are David Charvet (who spent […]
