Turner Classic Movies offers another evening of big-screen fictional female mystery-solvers tonight with five of the nine Torchy Blane films that were produced between 1937-39. These roughly hourlong productions, popular as the bottom halves of double features, found daring, fast-talking and wisecracking newspaper reporter Torchy (played most often by Glenda Farrell), always with an instinct for a scoop, unraveling a mystery and staying several steps ahead of her boyfriend, no-nonsense police detective Steve McBride (mostly played by Barton MacLane). See Torchy in action tonight when TCM airs the first five of these films that were produced. The initial four — Smart Blonde, Fly-Away Baby and The Adventurous Blonde, all from 1937, and 1938’s Blondes at Work — all feature Farrell as Torchy and MacLane as Steve, while Lola Lane and Paul Kelly step into those roles in the fifth title, Torchy Blane in Panama (1938).

James Cagney, who became a star nearly 20 years earlier with a legendary breakthrough performance in another memorable crime flick, The Public Enemy, gives an equally iconic turn in this Oscar-nominated 1949 gangster classic as coldblooded Cody Jarrett, a psychotic thug devoted to his hardboiled Ma (Margaret Wycherly). Bracingly directed by Raoul Walsh, this fast-paced film noir tracing Jarrett’s violent life in and out of jail is also a harrowing character study. Jarrett is a psychological time bomb ruled by impulse — he murders a wounded accomplice and revels in the act; neglects his sultry wife (Virginia Mayo); and adores his doting mother. It is among the most vivid screen performances of Cagney’s career, and shows that when it came to portraying such characters, the actor was “top of the world!”

The NFL playoffs begin today and continue Sunday and Monday with wild-card games airing on FOX, CBS, NBC and ABC/ESPN. Action starts Saturday with the Seattle Seahawks (9-8) going up against their division rivals, the NFC West champion San Francisco 49ers (13-4), on FOX. In primetime on NBC, the Los Angeles Chargers (10-7) are on the road against the AFC South champion Jacksonville Jaguars (9-8).

The Roku Channel has secured an exclusive one-year deal to livestream the Miss Universe competition, replacing FOX as the official English-language broadcast partner. The international event will be held in New Orleans, where nearly 90 women from around the world will vie for the title in categories such as interviews, evening gown, swimwear and community impact. At the end of the evening, reigning Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu of India will crown her successor.

How to Murder Your Husband: The Nancy Brophy Story

Lifetime’s latest original is based on a true crime story. Nancy Crampton-Brophy (Cybill Shepherd) seemed to have a knack for writing about murder. The Portland-based romance-thriller novelist authored books about tumultuous relationships and women protagonists who fantasized about killing their own husbands or fleeing their husbands and faking their own deaths. Hard to believe, but in 2022, Brophy was convicted of killing her own husband (played by Steve Guttenberg).
Harry: The Interview

This one-hour primetime special features the first United States telecast of the Duke of Sussex’s extensive sit-down with ITV journalist Tom Bradby. The original ITV interview aired in the U.K. on Jan. 8. The headline-making international interview features a lively and revealing conversation between Bradby and Prince Harry, who have known each other for 20 years. Prince Harry reads critical passages from his new book, Spare, and shares deep insight into his personal relationships, his marriage to Meghan Markle, the death of his mother, and his feelings for his father and brother. Prince Harry tells Bradby that a lot of people, after watching the interview and reading the book, will wonder how he could ever forgive his family. “People have already said that to me,” Prince Harry says. “And I said, forgiveness is 100% a possibility because I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back. At the moment, I don’t recognize them, as much as they probably don’t recognize me.”

Stories about girls and their horses have been so frequent as to almost be cliché at this point, but there have also been a few notable tales about the relationships between boys and their horses, some of which have been adapted for the big screen. Turner Classic Movies has two of those tonight, beginning with The Black Stallion (1979), based on Walter Farley’s novel. It follows a boy (Kelly Reno) who is shipwrecked with a wild Arabian stallion off the coast of Africa in the 1940s. Eventually bonding with the equine, the boy trains the horse to race after they are rescued. The film costars Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Mickey Rooney, who 35 years earlier had also starred in another famous horse-themed feature, 1944’s National Velvet. Tonight’s second film is My Friend Flicka (1943), an adaptation of Mary O’Hara’s novel. Young Roddy McDowall plays a boy who learns about life and responsibility after he is given the titular mustang filly to raise.
Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches: “The Dark Place”

First on this epic list of films is the Langston Hughes poem-inspired Blood of Jesus (1941), a fantasy drama about an atheist (Spencer Williams) who accidentally shoots his Baptist wife (Cathryn Caviness), causing her to die and travel to a crossroads where she is tempted by the devil. This is followed by Dudley Murphy’s film The Emperor Jones (1933), which was loosely based on a play by Eugene O’Neill, and centers around an ambitious man named Brutus (Paul Robeson) who escapes from jail and finds himself the emperor of a Caribbean island. Next, an educated Black woman (Evelyn Preer) with a shocking past dedicates herself to helping a school for impoverished youth after she’s abandoned by her fiancé in Within Our Gates (1920), and the oldest son of a loving and hardworking family of sharecroppers comes of age in the Depression-era South after his father is imprisoned for stealing food in the Oscar-nominated film Sounder (1972), based on a novel by William H. Armstrong. Following that is the Dorothy Dandridge-led film Bright Road (1953), which features a nearly all-Black cast, about an idealistic young teacher at the beginning of her career trying to help a problematic student. It’s also the first film appearance by Harry Belafonte, who costars as the principal. Next up is The Learning Tree (1969), based on a Gordon Parks novel, which follows the life of a poor Black 14-year-old in Kansas as he learns about love, fear and racial injustice, and Freedom on My Mind (1994), which chronicles the Mississippi voter registration drive from 1961-64. At 8pm, TCM will premiere the Emmy Award-winning The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974), a story of a woman born into slavery in the 1850s who becomes part of the civil rights movement a century later. Then, a young Sidney Poitier stars as a Black Philadelphia police detective who is mistakenly suspected of a local murder while passing through a Mississippi town in the Oscar-winning film In the Heat of the Night (1967), based on a novel by John Ball.

John Larroquette reprises his multiple Emmy-winning role of Dan Fielding, who this time is enlisted as the court’s public defender, rather than prosecutor. The comedy launches with back-to-back episodes.

TCM continues its January celebration of the scandal-plagued silent film actress Marion Davies. This appropriately nicknamed “Queen of the Screen” returns tonight beginning with The Bachelor Father (1931), a redemption story of a curmudgeonly old man who invites his three illegitimate adult children to live with him, followed by Five and Ten (1931), based on the 1929 Fannie Hurst novel of the same name, in which a young woman named Jenny (Davies) moves to New York City with her family and falls in love with an engaged man. A scandalous love triangle is the focus of the next film, Blondie of the Follies (1932), in which the friendship between two young women (Davies and Billie Dove) begins to fall apart when one wins a role in a Broadway show and the other’s boyfriend (Robert Montgomery) falls for her. Polly of the Circus (1932), a film adaptation of the play by Margaret Mayo, finds Davies playing an injured trapeze performer opposite the iconic Clark Gable, who plays a minister and a love interest. Turner Classic Movies concludes its Friday evening salute to fictional female film detectives this evening with four films. First is Lured (1947), a film noir offering a change of pace for fans of Lucille Ball who are accustomed to seeing her in more comedic roles. Ball plays an American in London who helps police find a serial killer after her friend disappears. George Sanders, Charles Coburn and Boris Karloff costar in director Douglas Sirk’s mystery. Next, in Wanted! Jane Turner (1936), both criminals and two postal investigators (played by Gloria Stuart and Lee Tracy) are intent on locating the “Jane Turner” to whom a letter and loads of cash were sent in the wake of a mail robbery. Following that is one of the earliest noir films, Stranger on the Third Floor (1940), in which Margaret Tallichet plays the fiancée of a reporter (John McGuire) who is arrested following two murders; in an attempt to clear his name, she seeks out a strange man (Peter Lorre) who seems linked to the crimes. Finally, in Deadline at Dawn (1946), Susan Hayward plays a dance-hall girl who embarks on an eventful evening as she helps a soon-to-ship-out sailor (Bill Williams) find the person who murdered a woman he had met earlier.
