This month’s Thursday night celebration of legendary movie star Humphrey Bogart on Turner Classic Movies continues with this evening’s six-film lineup of films set during, or after, World Wars I and II, and featuring characters who are somehow impacted by those conflicts. Beginning with the 1949 film noir Tokyo Joe, set in postwar Japan, the lineup continues with the Best Picture Oscar-nominated World War II-set military trial drama The Caine Mutiny (1954), which earned Bogie a Best Actor nomination as the infamous Lt. Cmdr. Queeg; the 1950 aviation drama Chain Lightning, with the actor as a former bomber pilot; two war films made during the height of World War II — Action in the North Atlantic (1943) and Passage to Marseille (1944), which reunites Bogie with Casablanca costar Claude Rains and director Michael Curtiz; and director Raoul Walsh’s The Roaring Twenties (1939), featuring Bogart, James Cagney and Jeffrey Lynn as World War I comrades-in-arms who later go into the bootlegging business when Prohibition takes effect in America.

100th Birthday Tribute: Janis Paige

Actress/singer Janis Paige, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s golden age, turns 100 today (she was born Donna Mae Tjaden in Tacoma, Washington, on Sept. 16, 1922). Now retired, Paige had a lengthy career on the stage, and big and small screens, that stretched from 1944 to 2001. Her feature film appearances from the mid 1940s into the early ’60s comprised a comparatively smaller part of her work compared to theater and television roles, but she still managed to be a big-screen scene stealer even in supporting roles, as you can see when Turner Classic Movies celebrates Paige’s birthday with a seven-movie marathon. The lineup features, in order: the film noir Her Kind of Man (1946), the actress’ third feature film; Winter Meeting (1948), a drama led by Bette Davis; Romance on the High Seas (1948), the Oscar-nominated musical romantic comedy that marked costar Doris Day’s film debut; One Sunday Afternoon (1948), a musical directed by Raoul Walsh and costarring Dennis Morgan; the 1949 comedy The House Across the Street; Silk Stockings (1957), the Fred Astaire- and Cyd Charisse-led musical romantic comedy that marked Paige’s return to a film role after a six-year absence; and one of Paige’s final film appearances before she turned her focus more toward TV and the stage: Bachelor in Paradise (1961), a romantic comedy costarring Bob Hope and Lana Turner.

In the second of three Friday evening programming blocks consisting of three movies (concluding next Friday, Sept. 23), three more immigrants join TCM host Ben Mankiewicz to discuss the movies that shaped their idea of the U.S. before they moved here. First up is the 1961 drama Splendor in the Grass, starring Best Actress Oscar nominee Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty, which guest Gabriel Bitton says he imagined was the most realistic portrayal of American teenage life as he was coming of age in Morocco. Next, Ash Nega introduces the 1979 drama The Champ, starring Best Actor Golden Globe nominee Jon Voight and Golden Globe winner Ricky Schroder in his film debut, and recalls how he watched the movie with his family in his community’s one-screen theater in Ethiopia, and being struck by its story of overcoming adversity and succeeding as the underdog. Finally, Crystal Lee introduces the Best Picture Oscar-nominated Love Story (1970), led by Best Actor nominee Ryan O’Neal and Best Actress nominee Ali MacGraw, and explains how the classic tearjerker made her want to travel from South Korea to the United States to study at an American university — even going so far as to fail out of college in Korea so she could go to the U.S.

Cowritten and directed by visionary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, this searing 1957 drama is among the most powerful anti-war films ever made — with its anti-military stance so profound and radical for its time that the movie was banned in France for nearly 20 years and banned on U.S. military bases in Europe. Based on the novel by Humphrey Cobb, Paths of Glory tells the story of shell-shocked French World War I soldiers ordered on a suicide mission reluctantly led by Col. Dax (a fiery Kirk Douglas). When Dax refuses the corrupt Gen. Mireau’s (George Macready) orders for soldiers to fire on their own ranks to keep them driving forward during this impossible mission, the general scapegoats a group of the soldiers to protect his promotion, accusing them of cowardice in a kangaroo court. This haunting, exquisitely photographed dissection of the military machine in all its absurdity and capacity for dehumanization (a theme Kubrick would continue to explore throughout his career) is mesmerizing from its tense trench warfare sequences to its gripping courtroom climax to its ravaging final scene.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2022 began last Thursday and will continue until Oct. 15. Tonight and next Sunday, Turner Classic Movies celebrates Hispanic cinematic heritage with themed evenings of films. Tonight’s lineup is a double feature starring Mexican-born American actor Lalo Ríos, who had a brief but accomplished film and TV career spanning 1950 to 1969, prior to passing away at the young age of 46 in 1973. Up first tonight is, fittingly, Ríos’ feature film debut — The Lawless (1950), a film noir in which he plays a young Mexican fruit picker in a small California town who faces a racist lynch mob. The second movie on tonight’s double bill, The Ring (1952), features Ríos in his most well-known role, as Tommy, a Mexican-American who becomes a boxer, believing that will gain him respect among the English-speaking white majority. Costarring Rita Moreno in one of her earlier film roles, The Ring examines institutionalized bigotry and was one of the first sports-themed Hollywood films that depicted discrimination against Hispanics in its story.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Monday night spotlight on the intersection between cinema and radio across various themes continues tonight with an initial lineup of movies in which radio plays a major role in the story (this theme will continue next Monday evening). Kicking off tonight’s five-film lineup is Radio Days (1987), a comedy/drama directed and featuring an Oscar-nominated screenplay by Woody Allen, who also narrates the nostalgic tale that follows a family back in the golden age of radio, using music and memories of the time to enhance the ambience. Mia Farrow, Dianne Wiest, Danny Aiello, Jeff Daniels and Seth Green are among the large ensemble cast. The next film, 1983’s holiday comedy A Christmas Story, offers more 1940s radio nostalgia as its young protagonist, Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), at one point uses a “secret decoder ring” to decipher what ends up being a hilariously cynical message he jots down while listening to the Little Orphan Annie radio show. Rounding out the evening are The Hucksters (1947), a satire skewering the post-World War II radio advertising industry, led by Clark Gable and Deborah Kerr; A Face in the Crowd (1957), featuring Andy Griffith in his film debut as an amoral drifter who rises to become a radio and TV demagogue; and The Next Voice You Hear (1950), an unusual drama in which the voice of God is heard over the radio, causing a widespread mix of hope and panic throughout the world.

Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) are called in to assist after the realization that this is more than a typical homicide. After uncovering key evidence, Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and ADA Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) seek justice against an international crime ring, but complications threaten the case. Tonight’s installment of Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Thursday night celebration of iconic actor Humphrey Bogart’s films begins with six titles from the actor’s prime, representing his work as a romantic leading man, followed by four of his earlier films, which feature him in supporting roles of various types. The evening begins with two of Bogie’s most famous romantic roles, which happen to be two of the most famous films of all time in general: Best Director Oscar nominee Billy Wilder’s comedy/drama Sabrina (1954), costarring Best Actress nominee Audrey Hepburn and William Holden, and one of Bogart’s last films before his 1957 passing, followed by the legendary, Best Picture-winning Casablanca (1942), which earned Bogie a Best Actor nomination alongside fantastic costars like Ingrid Bergman and Best Supporting Actor nominee Claude Rains. Rounding out the “Bogie in Love” portion of the evening are Dark Victory (1939), led by Best Actress nominee Bette Davis; the film noir In a Lonely Place (1950), starring Bogie in a darker-tinged story of more obsessive love alongside Gloria Grahame; The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947), a mystery drama also starring Barbara Stanwyck; and The Wagons Roll at Night (1941), a circus-set drama costarring Sylvia Sidney. As the lineup moves into Bogart’s earlier works starting tomorrow morning, the titles featured are the dramas China Clipper (1936) and One Fatal Hour (1936, aka Two Against the World); the crime film The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (1938), led by Edward G. Robinson and Claire Trevor; and the Busby Berkeley-directed romantic comedy Men Are Such Fools (1938).

Among the many 1960s spy movies and parodies of the genre that hit theaters in the wake of the successful launch of the James Bond films, the two comedies starring James Coburn as secret agent extraordinaire Derek Flint are among the most enjoyable and culturally enduring (you can see traces of their influence in the Austin Powers movies, for example). MOVIES! will be airing both of these titles today, beginning with the original, 1966’s Our Man Flint, in which the super-spy is called back from retirement to stop a trio of mad scientists attempting to blackmail the world with their weather-controlling machine. The film costars Lee J. Cobb, who returns with Coburn in the 1967 sequel In Like Flint, which comes up next on today’s schedule. This time, Flint confronts a cabal of women who are plotting to take over the world (“the bad guys … are girls!” exclaimed the comedy’s promotional poster at its release).

She is the spotlight of this evening’s triple feature on Turner Classic Movies consisting of her earlier film work. The evening begins with one of her most well-known appearances, alongside Richard Carlson in the 1953 sci-fi classic It Came From Outer Space, giving a performance for which she was awarded the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer — Female (tying with Pat Crowley). This is followed by another sci-fi favorite costarring Rush, her fourth feature film: producer George Pal’s When Worlds Collide (1951).
