M*A*S*H costar Jamie Farr (Klinger) is back to select two more of his favorite episodes from the series, along with sharing commentary and memories. Up first is “Crisis,” from Season 2, which finds the 4077th resorting to desperate measures when their supply lines are cut, including Klinger attempting to bunk with the nurses, followed by Season 3’s “Springtime,” in which Klinger marries his girlfriend, Laverne Esposito, via radio.
M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever

This hourlong special commemorates the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking series M*A*S*H, which premiered Sept. 17, 1972, and ran for 11 seasons until its record-setting final episode on Feb. 28, 1983. Through new exclusive interviews with cast members Jamie Farr (Cpl. Max Klinger), Mike Farrell (Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt) and Jeff Maxwell (Pvt. Igor Straminsky), as well as with producers and writers, the program explores not only the series’ popularity and creative firsts, but also how cast and crew battled with network executives to keep the show alive after a lukewarm reaction to its first season almost led to its cancellation. The actors also recall their first days on set and their favorite episodes, and offer thoughts on what made M*A*S*H a hit and why it endures today.

Turner Classic Movies’ evening of puppet-themed films kicks off with this fun 1984 musical comedy directed by Frank Oz that was the third feature film in the Muppets franchise, and the final one produced before their creator Jim Henson’s passing in 1990. Henson, of course, provides many of the voices, including, among others, Kermit the Frog, Rowlf the Dog and Dr. Teeth, while director Oz also lends his familiar vocal talents to characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal and more, in this story that finds Kermit and friends going to New York City to get their musical on Broadway. Among the star-studded human cameos are Art Carney, Gregory Hines, Brooke Shields, Elliott Gould and Liza Minnelli.

Today, Peacock launches DocFest, a six-week virtual festival featuring a new original documentary dropping each Wednesday starting today and through Oct. 19. The titles will be available in a dedicated collection on the Peacock platform and include everything from feature-length films to multipart series. It kicks off today with the film Hell of a Cruise, which uses never-before-seen self-shot footage to help explore what went wrong aboard the luxury Diamond Princess cruise ship in January 2020, when passengers and crew had no idea that the deadly novel coronavirus had boarded the ship with them and would turn the floating paradise into their worst nightmare.
A Walton’s Family Reunion

The beloved family drama The Waltons premiered 50 years ago today, on Sept. 14, 1972, and to celebrate, INSP is airing this 2010 reunion special that brought together several surviving cast members nearly 30 years after the show ended. The program, which airs in two half-hour parts running back-to-back, is hosted by Mary Beth McDonough, who played Erin Walton, and also features Richard Thomas (John-Boy), Ralph Waite (John), Michael Learned (Olivia), Judy Norton (Mary Ellen), Eric Scott (Ben), Jon Walmsley (Jason), David W. Harper (Jim-Bob) and Kami Cotler (Elizabeth), as well as series creator Earl Hamner Jr, who all reminisce about the show and its impact on American culture.

Writer/director Peter Hyams’ somewhat under-the-radar 1990 neo-noir film is among the better entries in the “stuck on a train” subgenre of action thriller. A loose remake of the 1952 film noir The Narrow Margin, it is led by the always-terrific Gene Hackman as a Los Angeles deputy district attorney assigned to keep a murder witness (Anne Archer) safe from hitmen while traveling aboard a train through the Canadian wilderness. The cast also includes familiar character actors J.T. Walsh and M. Emmet Walsh, and along with the performances, the story’s action is enhanced by composer Bruce Boughton’s gripping musical score.

This month’s Thursday night celebration of legendary movie star Humphrey Bogart on Turner Classic Movies continues with this evening’s six-film lineup of films set during, or after, World Wars I and II, and featuring characters who are somehow impacted by those conflicts. Beginning with the 1949 film noir Tokyo Joe, set in postwar Japan, the lineup continues with the Best Picture Oscar-nominated World War II-set military trial drama The Caine Mutiny (1954), which earned Bogie a Best Actor nomination as the infamous Lt. Cmdr. Queeg; the 1950 aviation drama Chain Lightning, with the actor as a former bomber pilot; two war films made during the height of World War II — Action in the North Atlantic (1943) and Passage to Marseille (1944), which reunites Bogie with Casablanca costar Claude Rains and director Michael Curtiz; and director Raoul Walsh’s The Roaring Twenties (1939), featuring Bogart, James Cagney and Jeffrey Lynn as World War I comrades-in-arms who later go into the bootlegging business when Prohibition takes effect in America.

Disturbing new evidence reveals a dark and deadly presence on the premises, and it has a personal vendetta against Zak.

Actress/singer Janis Paige, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s golden age, turns 100 today (she was born Donna Mae Tjaden in Tacoma, Washington, on Sept. 16, 1922). Now retired, Paige had a lengthy career on the stage, and big and small screens, that stretched from 1944 to 2001. Her feature film appearances from the mid 1940s into the early ’60s comprised a comparatively smaller part of her work compared to theater and television roles, but she still managed to be a big-screen scene stealer even in supporting roles, as you can see when Turner Classic Movies celebrates Paige’s birthday with a seven-movie marathon. The lineup features, in order: the film noir Her Kind of Man (1946), the actress’ third feature film; Winter Meeting (1948), a drama led by Bette Davis; Romance on the High Seas (1948), the Oscar-nominated musical romantic comedy that marked costar Doris Day’s film debut; One Sunday Afternoon (1948), a musical directed by Raoul Walsh and costarring Dennis Morgan; the 1949 comedy The House Across the Street; Silk Stockings (1957), the Fred Astaire- and Cyd Charisse-led musical romantic comedy that marked Paige’s return to a film role after a six-year absence; and one of Paige’s final film appearances before she turned her focus more toward TV and the stage: Bachelor in Paradise (1961), a romantic comedy costarring Bob Hope and Lana Turner.

In the second of three Friday evening programming blocks consisting of three movies (concluding next Friday, Sept. 23), three more immigrants join TCM host Ben Mankiewicz to discuss the movies that shaped their idea of the U.S. before they moved here. First up is the 1961 drama Splendor in the Grass, starring Best Actress Oscar nominee Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty, which guest Gabriel Bitton says he imagined was the most realistic portrayal of American teenage life as he was coming of age in Morocco. Next, Ash Nega introduces the 1979 drama The Champ, starring Best Actor Golden Globe nominee Jon Voight and Golden Globe winner Ricky Schroder in his film debut, and recalls how he watched the movie with his family in his community’s one-screen theater in Ethiopia, and being struck by its story of overcoming adversity and succeeding as the underdog. Finally, Crystal Lee introduces the Best Picture Oscar-nominated Love Story (1970), led by Best Actor nominee Ryan O’Neal and Best Actress nominee Ali MacGraw, and explains how the classic tearjerker made her want to travel from South Korea to the United States to study at an American university — even going so far as to fail out of college in Korea so she could go to the U.S.

Cowritten and directed by visionary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, this searing 1957 drama is among the most powerful anti-war films ever made — with its anti-military stance so profound and radical for its time that the movie was banned in France for nearly 20 years and banned on U.S. military bases in Europe. Based on the novel by Humphrey Cobb, Paths of Glory tells the story of shell-shocked French World War I soldiers ordered on a suicide mission reluctantly led by Col. Dax (a fiery Kirk Douglas). When Dax refuses the corrupt Gen. Mireau’s (George Macready) orders for soldiers to fire on their own ranks to keep them driving forward during this impossible mission, the general scapegoats a group of the soldiers to protect his promotion, accusing them of cowardice in a kangaroo court. This haunting, exquisitely photographed dissection of the military machine in all its absurdity and capacity for dehumanization (a theme Kubrick would continue to explore throughout his career) is mesmerizing from its tense trench warfare sequences to its gripping courtroom climax to its ravaging final scene.
