Rock band Foo Fighters and the family of their late drummer, Taylor Hawkins, who passed away March 25 at age 50, come together with Paramount to present this all-star global music event, which streams live on Paramount+ from London’s Wembley Stadium, with an hourlong compilation of highlights from the event airing on CBS later this evening. The concert will feature some of the biggest names in music joining together to celebrate Hawkins’ life, music and love. In addition to having critical acclaim and a popular readership for his famous hardboiled crime fiction novels, author James Mallahan Cain also had several of his works adapted into equally well-regarded films; two of the most famous of these film noir adaptations air tonight on Turner Classic Movies. Up first is Best Director Oscar nominee Billy Wilder’s Best Picture-nominated Double Indemnity (1944), led by Best Actress nominee Barbara Stanwyck as one of the screen’s most iconic femme fatales. She plays a housewife who seduces an insurance representative (Fred MacMurray) into a scheme involving insurance fraud and murder. Wilder also received an Oscar nomination for the screenplay adaptation of Cain’s novel that he cowrote with Raymond Chandler, another famed mystery/crime author. The second feature on tonight’s Cain double bill, The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), features another great femme fatale, this time portrayed by Lana Turner. She stars as a married woman who falls for a drifter (John Garfield), with the two eventually plotting to murder her husband.

Ernst Lubitsch’s classic 1942 dark comedy is a bold combination of political satire, romance, slapstick and wartime espionage that began production before the United States entered World War II, and hit theaters about two months after America had joined the conflict, bringing audiences a timely artistic attack on the fascist powers the nation was now at war with. Jack Benny and Carole Lombard (in her final film role; she perished at age 33 in a plane crash about a month before this film’s release) are terrific as husband-and-wife actors in Nazi-occupied Warsaw who, with their acting troupe, become embroiled in a spy plot using their skills at dressing up and posing as other people. Lubitsch’s film successfully walks the fine line of being a hilarious satire of Nazi ideology that also does not minimize its threat, a fact that wasn’t necessarily recognized when the film was first released, but which viewers have come to appreciate in the ensuing decades.

If your mind is on football with the NFL kicking off its new season this week, and college football already underway, MOVIES! has another outlet for your passion with two classic gridiron-themed films airing this afternoon. Up first is Knute Rockne, All American (1940), the biopic about the life of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne (portrayed by Pat O’Brien), who led the Fighting Irish between 1918-30, before his untimely death in a plane crash. The film famously features Ronald Reagan as player George Gipp, who, while on his deathbed with a fatal illness, asks his coach to tell the team to “win one for the Gipper.” Today’s lineup moves to pro football for its next film, another fact-based story: Brian’s Song (1971). Originally aired as an ABC Movie of the Week, this tear-jerking drama is a cut above a standard made-for-television production thanks in large part to its two leads: James Caan and Billy Dee Williams, both of whom received Emmy nominations for their performances. The movie recounts the life of Brian Piccolo (Caan), who played for the Chicago Bears for four years before he lost his life to a terminal cancer at age 26 in 1970. Piccolo’s story is told through his friendship with teammate Gale Sayers (Williams), based on Sayers’ account of that relationship in his 1970 autobiography I Am Third. Among the 11 Emmy nominations Brian’s Song received, it won five, including Outstanding Single Program — Drama or Comedy and Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Drama for Jack Warden as Coach George Halas. And, of course, it always ranks high whenever a list of “guy-cry” movies is put together.

Today, Turner Classic Movies and MOVIES! are both featuring movie marathons to celebrate the birth of acclaimed and influential filmmaker Elias Kazantzoglou — better known as Elia Kazan — who was born Sept. 7, 1909, in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) in the no-longer-extant Ottoman Empire (he died in New York City Sept. 28, 2003, at age 94). TCM’s six-title lineup begins early in the morning and kicks off with the 1941 film noir/musical Blues in the Night, one of the very few films featuring Kazan just as an actor. The lineup then continues with classics from his directorial work: Splendor in the Grass (1961), the romantic drama led by Best Actress Oscar nominee Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty; the Spencer Tracy- and Katharine Hepburn-led Western The Sea of Grass (1947), one of Kazan’s earliest films as a director; one of his last films, The Arrangement, a 1969 drama starring Kirk Douglas and Faye Dunaway that Kazan also wrote, adapting his own novel; East of Eden (1955), the James Dean-led drama that earned Kazan a Best Director Oscar nomination; and the Best Picture Oscar-nominated adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), which also netted the director an Oscar nomination and stars Best Actress winner Vivien Leigh, Best Actor nominee Marlon Brando, Best Supporting Actor winner Karl Malden and Best Supporting Actress winner Kim Hunter. The four-film Kazan celebration on MOVIES! begins in the early afternoon with A Face in the Crowd (1957), a powerful and still timely drama about a drifter (Andy Griffith) who rises to become an influential media demagogue. That is followed by Wild River (1960), a drama led by Montgomery Clift and Lee Remick; Panic in the Streets, a 1950 film noir starring Richard Widmark; and Gentleman’s Agreement (1947), the Best Picture-winning drama that won Kazan a Best Director Oscar with his first nomination and earned a Best Supporting Actress win for Celeste Holm, who costars with Best Actor nominee Gregory Peck, Best Actress nominee Dorothy McGuire and Anne Revere, who also received a Supporting Actress nod.

Starting tonight, and continuing the next two Friday evenings, Turner Classic Movies highlights immigrants’ perceptions of the United States and what it means to be American, through the lens of the American movies they watched when they were young. Over the course of the three weeks, each night encompassing a three-film programming block, a total of nine immigrants will join TCM host Ben Mankiewicz to discuss the movies that shaped their idea of the U.S. before they moved here. Tonight’s lineup begins with the 1955 war film To Hell and Back, starring Audie Murphy as himself, which is introduced by Hemrani Vyas, who explains how the movie inspired her father, Ajay Vyas, to move from Kenya to the U.S. and join the Army (even joining the same regiment as Murphy). Next is the 1949 Robert Mitchum- and Janet Leigh-led romantic comedy Holiday Affair, which guest Vera Petrovic says inspired her holiday traditions in America when she moved here from former Yugoslavia. Finally, Ali Estefam introduces the classic 1967 prison drama Cool Hand Luke, headlined by Paul Newman, and explains how the film instilled the idea of American persistence in her while a college student in Brazil.

Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra at the Kennedy Center

The final performance of the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra’s European and American tour concluded with an Aug. 20 performance at New York City’s Kennedy Center, which was filmed for this broadcast. The orchestra was comprised of recent Ukrainian refugees and other artists in a gesture of solidarity with the victims of the war in Ukraine. Under the leadership of Canadian-Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, the orchestra performs a program that includes Ukrainian composer Valentyn Silvestrov’s Symphony No. 7; Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with Ukrainian virtuoso Anna Fedorova; and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (aka “From the New World” symphony). Leading Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska will also perform Leonore’s aria “Abscheulicher! Wo eilst du hin?” from Beethoven’s opera Fidelio, a paean to humanity and peace in the face of violence and cruelty.
