Adele One Night Only
CBS, 8:30pm

We’re already feeling shortchanged. Two hours is not enough time with Adele, the 15-time Grammy winner who had us long before “Hello.” And even if this stunning talent couldn’t sing a note, she’d be good company — a cutup of a mum from North London who laughs at the fact that many babies have been conceived listening to her work: “I do make lovemaking music!” In this special, she sits down with Oprah Winfrey in her rose garden (topics: her divorce, losing 100 pounds) and performs hits as well as tracks from her upcoming album, 30, out Nov. 19. If Adele follows her usual concert MO, expect her to candidly announce, “I’m gonna take me shoes off.”

Mayor of Kingstown
Paramount+; series premiere simulcast on Paramount Network at 9pm
New Series!

“There’s a lot of things that define Mike McLusky,” says Mayor of Kingstown star/executive producer Jeremy Renner of his character in the series. “And it all starts with the family. It will always start with the family.” The McLusky family is the focus of this 10-episode drama from Yellowstone cocreator Taylor Sheridan. The clan are power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at the McLuskys’ attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither. The series costars Kyle Chandler, Dianne Wiest and series cocreator Hugh Dillon, who also stars in Sheridan’s Yellowstone. And Yellowstone will serve as a launching pad for this series; Paramount Network will simulcast the Kingstown series premiere on Nov. 14 following a new episode of the former series. New episodes are available Sundays on Paramount+.

Sunday Night Sex Comedies
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

It’s time for another double feature of famous 1950s/’60s romantic/sex comedies on Turner Classic Movies, and this evening’s lineup begins with one of the most famous: 1955’s The Seven Year Itch. Directed by Billy Wilder and led by Marilyn Monroe (and featuring the iconic image of her white dress billowing up from the rush of a passing train while she’s standing on a subway grate), the film finds a married man (Tom Ewell) falling for the blond bombshell living upstairs (Monroe, as a character billed just as “The Girl”) while his wife and son are away on vacation. Married men also cause complications in tonight’s second film, Boys’ Night Out (1962), from director Michael Gordon, who had also helmed Pillow Talk a few years earlier. Four friends — three of them (played by Tony Randall, Howard Duff and Howard Morris) married, and one (James Garner) divorced — become envious of their philandering boss’ fling with his mistress and decide to try renting an apartment to set up as a secret love pad. The guys can’t believe their luck when a knockout (Kim Novak) also expresses interest in the apartment they have their eye on. They hire her on as a “housekeeper” for the pad, expecting something more, but the woman — who is actually a doctoral sociology student researching the “adolescent fantasies of the adult suburban male” — deftly avoids the men’s individual attempts at seduction even if they like to boast otherwise. — Jeff Pfeiffer

Dexter Morgan is proof that there is life after death. Well, fake death, that is. Eight years after the Miami serial killer of bad guys (Michael C. Hall) disappeared in a hurricane on the 2006-13 drama’s much-derided ending, the antihero is back for a 10-episode thrill ride. Says Hall, “We wanted to do something decidedly new but also maintain fundamental parts of the original.” New Blood shows Dexter with a new identity (mild-mannered cashier Jim Lindsay), a new home (charming Iron Lake, New York) and a new vow not to kill. For the past decade, he “has been committed to abstinence,” explains Hall, until unfortunate events in the Nov. 7 debut change that. “This show is Dexter,” says exec producer Clyde Phillips with a laugh, “and people die.” While Dexter has blood on his hands in the present, he’s also got to deal with the past, which comes back to haunt him both literally and figuratively. His late sister Deb (original series star Jennifer Carpenter) appears in visions as his conscience (Carpenter calls this version of her character Dexter’s “shame and his pain”). And now-teen son Harrison (Jack Alcott), whom Dexter left behind when he faked his death, has tracked him down at the worst possible time. (There’s still blood on his property from a fresh kill!)

9-1-1: “Defend in Place”
FOX, 8pm

Holey moly, Los Angeles really is the pits this season! Not only has NBC’s La Brea opened up a massive sinkhole in the middle of the City of Angels, but now FOX’s first-responder drama has an epic fissure to deal with. “It was just a funny coincidence,” says co-showrunner Kristen Reidel with a laugh. Instead of a portal back to prehistoric times, the 9-1-1 disaster is caused by an underground oil-well explosion that craters a downtown L.A. street — swallowing a woman taking her driving test. “Our inspiration here was really, have you ever wished the earth would open up and swallow you whole? OK, now, what if it did?” And although we won’t see any birds from the Pleistocene epoch flying out of the sinkhole, Reidel jokes that the episode may still scare some viewers. “We don’t have any creatures, but it does start at the DMV, which I think for a lot of people inspires a different kind of terror.”

TCM Spotlight: Dance Numbers
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

It’s time again for any Monday blues you might be having to be lifted by Turner Classic Movies’ evening of classic movie musicals with memorable choreography. The lineup begins with Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel and Ann Miller in Kiss Me Kate (1953), the adaptation of the 1948 Broadway production that was inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Famous choreographer Hermes Pan staged the dance numbers, set to Cole Porter tunes like “So in Love,” “Too Darn Hot” and “Always True to You in My Fashion.” The film also features Bob Fosse as a supporting character in his second movie appearance; he, of course, would soon go on to become a brilliant stage and screen choreographer in his own right. Up next is The Gay Divorcee (1934), the Oscar-winning musical featuring the legendarily smooth moves of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in their second big-screen pairing. The duo flawlessly flow together in numbers also staged by Pan in what was his second film, and his first as primary choreographer (even if he wasn’t billed as such). Astaire and Jane Powell lead the next film, Royal Wedding (1951), which features a number of fun dance routines choreographed by Nick Castle, including two of Astaire’s most famous solo numbers (on whose choreography the actor likely also had considerable input): his dance with a hat rack to the song “Sunday Jumps” and the incredibly designed sequence in which he dances on the walls and ceilings of his room to the tune “You’re All the World to Me.” Astaire also stars in the next film, the Oscar-winning, Pan-choreographed Swing Time (1936), again with Rogers, and with Cyd Charisse in the evening’s final title, Silk Stockings (1957), choreographed by Pan and Eugene Loring. — Jeff Pfeiffer

Gordon Parks — Part 1
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Beginning tonight, and concluding next Tuesday evening, Turner Classic Movies will honor renowned filmmaker and photographer Gordon Parks. “I chose my camera as a weapon against all the things I dislike about America — poverty, racism, discrimination,” Parks said. Whether it was with his still camera as a photojournalist, or with a motion-picture camera as a moviemaker and documentarian, he was true to his word: From the 1940s through the ’70s, his various works offered searing insights into the Black experience in America. On the popular movie front, Parks became the first Black filmmaker to produce and direct a major motion picture in Hollywood, and he created what was to be known as the popular “blaxploitation” genre of the ’70s with films like 1971’s Shaft. Tonight’s celebration of Parks on TCM begins with the network premiere of the 1973 documentary Listen to a Stranger: An Interview With Gordon Parks, an in-depth interview with Parks where he discusses his life and career. This is followed by Parks’ 1964 documentary short Flavio, which follows Flavio da Silva, a 12-year-old boy in a family of 10 living in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. After that is the 1969 drama The Learning Tree, written and directed by Parks and based on his semiautobiographical 1963 novel of the same name. It was the first film directed by an African American for a major film studio, and was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1989 for its significance. After that is the iconic, Oscar-winning Shaft, the influential crime drama with which Parks is most associated as a director. With a dynamic performance by Richard Roundtree as the title character, private detective John Shaft, the film is fun and action-filled while still speaking to the themes that were important to Parks. In 2000, Shaft was also added to the National Film Registry. Its 1972 follow-up, Shaft’s Big Score!, directed by and with music from Parks, concludes this first evening devoted to him. — Evan McLean

Set in 1890, the mystery finds him playing a somewhat different type of character, at least at first, as a respected Scotland Yard superintendent who is fired after a mistake in an investigation leads to an innocent man’s execution. But Greenstreet eventually brings out the shadiness in this character as he seeks to ruin the reputation of the gloating superintendent who replaced him, enlisting the help of his friend (frequent Greenstreet costar Peter Lorre, who plays right-to-type as a creepy artist). Also tonight: Three Strangers, another 1946 film noir with Greenstreet as the lead character and costarring Lorre, as well as Geraldine Fitzgerald; The Conspirators (1944), a wartime spy thriller led by Hedy Lamarr and Paul Henreid, with Greenstreet and Lorre in supporting roles; the 1945 romantic comedy Pillow to Post, starring Ida Lupino and William Prince; another comedy, 1947’s That Way With Women, with Dane Clark, Martha Vickers and Alan Hale Sr.; and Devotion, a fictionalized 1946 biopic about the lives of famous literary sisters Charlotte and Emily Brontë (Olivia de Havilland and Ida Lupino), with Greenstreet portraying novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. — Jeff Pfeiffer

Mel Brooks Triple Feature
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Three of the high points of Mel Brooks’ filmmaking career — and three of the funniest comedies in Hollywood history — are on display with tonight’s hilarious triple feature on Turner Classic Movies. First up is 1974’s Young Frankenstein, directed by Brooks from an Oscar-nominated screenplay by Brooks and star Gene Wilder that is a pitch-perfect send-up of 1930s horror classics, particularly Universal’s various Frankenstein adaptations. Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars and Madeline Kahn round out the exceptional ensemble cast. Leachman and Kahn are back in tonight’s next film, High Anxiety (1977), which marked Brooks’ first lead speaking role. Not quite as successful a parody as Young Frankenstein, it still manages to take sharp and uproarious aim at its subject: the characters, tropes and techniques of Hollywood suspense thrillers, particularly the films of Alfred Hitchcock. Harvey Korman also costars. Tonight’s final Brooks classic is another one released in 1974, and one often regarded as his most brilliantly funny work ever: Blazing Saddles. Directed by Brooks, who cowrote the screenplay with, among others, comedian Richard Pryor, Blazing Saddles is led by Cleavon Little as a Black man who shocks a frontier town when he is appointed the new sheriff. The film holds nothing back as it skewers the conventions of old-time Hollywood Westerns, particularly their racist elements. Wilder, Korman and Kahn are also among the ensemble cast, with Kahn nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. — Jeff Pfeiffer

The ladies found themselves in what Winnick dubs “the ultimate standoff” with the local crime syndicate after Jenny was revealed to be a cop. Tonight, we pick up mid-standoff, and while the women will get to walk away, there may be consequences. Someone in the crew grows suspicious of undercover cop Travis (Logan Marshall-Green), Jenny’s latest fling. When he goes missing, she fears the worst. “This is the episode where she realizes her feelings are more involved,” Winnick says. “She needs to do whatever it takes to make sure he’s OK, and even use her badge to cross the lines of the law to hopefully find him again.
