Groove Things Will Be Shaken in IFC’s ‘Sherman’s Showcase’

Michael Moriatis/AMC

If you’ve ever gotten a good laugh from seeing old episodes of Soul Train, American Bandstand or Solid Gold online, then you’ll know what Sherman’s Showcase (premieres on IFC Wednesday, July 31, at 10pm ET/PT) is talkin’ ’bout.

Bashir Salahuddin (South Side) stars as Sherman McDaniels, host of a fictional musical variety show that has been on the air for decades. McDaniels reaches deep into the fake show’s 40-year library and grabs music, dancing and comedy highlights, including a funk super group from the 1970s, an up-and-coming MC from the ’80s and an R&B diva from the ’90s.

Guest stars include John Legend (who also executive produces), Common, Tiffany Haddish, Morris Day, Tawny Newsome, Mike Judge, Kenny and Keith Lucas, Ray Parker Jr., Mario Van Peebles, Damon Wayans Jr., Marlon Wayans, Bresha Webb, Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor and hip-hop star Ne-Yo, who channels Rick James as the lead singer of superfreaky funk act Galaxia.
