Who’s In It? David Alan Grier, Martin Mull, Vicki Lawrence, Leslie Jordan

What’s It All About? It’s like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for the senior set. It’s Always Sunny’s Charlie Day is creator and executive producer of this multi-cam comedy about a tightknit group of pals living in Shady Meadows Retirement Community. Fun-loving Hank (Grier) is the crew’s leader and master mischief maker. Charlie (Mull) has countless tales, many of which may have involved drugs in the ’60s. Hypochondriac Sid (Jordan) is the group’s wet blanket, yet he always caves to peer pressure. When their close friend Jerry dies, there’s suddenly an open seat at the dining hall’s “cool kids” table, and it’s snapped up by no-nonsense newcomer Margaret (Lawrence). That doesn’t sit well with the gents, and high jinks ensue! With its brilliantly talented cast, we’d be bowled over if The Cool Kids didn’t enjoy a few golden years.

Casting The “Cool Kids”
Believe it or not, despite being longtime stars in the industry, this talented cast still went through auditions. “They wanna make sure you’re still home,” Jordan tells us. “I went in, and I said, ‘Well, I’m going to put a little different spin on this.’” And the minute Jordan opened his mouth, they knew they had their guy. Lawrence laughed and explained the usual reaction she gets on auditions, “People always say, ‘Oh, we thought you were gonna be much older.’ Because they’re expecting [my Carol Burnett character Mama] to walk in the room.” They forget she was just 24 when she played that role. In addition to the series’ core foursome, the show does lend itself to potential guest spots. Jamie Farr (M*A*S*H) snuck in for the pilot. “I’m hoping Carol will walk in,” Lawrence says. “As a crazy old lady that we have no idea what to do with. Just out of her flippin’ mind.” Whoever the guests, the casting on this one couldn’t be better.
