What’s It All About? Jake (Wayans) and Claire (West) are a married couple in their early 30s who have to schedule Saturday Night Coursework (i.e., sex) but still make time every week to record silly outgoing voicemail messages on their landline. Jake is an accountant for Australian pop star Cooper James (Mallard), who unexpectedly shows up at their house looking for a place to hide from paparazzi.
Cooper becomes enthralled with Jake and Claire’s suburban life and their Toaster Strudels. Jake and Claire find that Cooper makes them feel “young and fun and full of beans” again. Thinking maybe Cooper needs someone to look out for his best interests, Jake and Claire invite Cooper to live with them on a more permanent basis.
If the premise sounds implausible, consider that it’s based on a real occurrence when One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles sought refuge in the home of TV producer Ben Winston and his wife. “Maybe seven or eight years ago, I was making a film with One Direction, directing a few of their music videos, and I had just moved into my very modest, quiet house in London, in the most suburban area of London you could possibly imagine,” Winston says. “A young man who I was working with at the time with the name of Harry Styles asked me if he could live in our attic for what would only be a couple weeks. … Eighteen months later, Harry moved out of our attic.”
But Styles’ star power won’t pay Happy Together‘s rent, and we think the show will wear out its welcome by the third episode.
