Cormoran Strike is a veteran who lost his leg in Afghanistan and now works as a private investigator in London, aided by Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger), who begins as Strike’s temp assistant but quickly proves her own case-solving mettle. The first three hourlong episodes make up “The Cuckoo’s Calling,” in which Strike is hired to determine whether a model’s death, ruled a suicide, was actually murder.
