The State: Parts One and Two

This new four-part drama begins with two hourlong episodes tonight, and concludes with the same tomorrow. It follows the experiences of four British men and women who leave their lives behind to join the extremist ISIS group in Syria. In tonight’s premiere episodes, the new recruits take oaths of allegiance to ISIS, but are soon confronted by the harsh realities of their new lives, which do not match their expectations.

Bill, Jen, Will and Zoey are back for a new season that sees the Klein-Arnold clan take a European vacation and make the move from Texas to Florida for Jen’s job. The mobile family also heads for Washington, D.C., to host an adoption gala and celebrate Zoey turning 5, then gives the kids their first taste of snow during a ski trip to Vermont for Will’s big day.

The four-hour miniseries concludes with tonight’s two hourlong episodes. Marriage to a foreign fighter proves challenging for Ushna, but she is determined to make it work. Shakira, too, must marry to continue working, but turns down a proposal from Abu Akram, with brutal consequences. Jalal is given a new role by ISIS and witnesses barbaric punishments and mock executions to feed its propaganda machine. With the noose tightening around him, he decides to risk his own safety to help Ibitsam and Narin escape.
