While they’re trying to plant their flags, the rest of the crew — Phoebe (Beau Garrett), Jo (Alanna Ubach) and Delia (Necar Zadegan) — will also seek various forms of empowerment. As for whether all that independence will leave any room for romance, not to worry: There’s plenty in the pipeline, including the return of Abby’s former flame Will (Warren Christie) and Barbara’s deepening connection with the dreamy contractor played by Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

NFL Preseason: Tampa Bay at Jacksonville

The Guest Book: “Story Four”
The series is based on the fictitious stories series creator Greg Garcia wrote in guest books over the years. In tonight’s episode, Christy (Jaime Pressly) heads up to the mountains to try to bond with her new boyfriend, Paul (John Ortiz), and his 8-year-old daughter. However, when she self-medicates to deal with her anxiety, she ends up revealing some skeletons in her closet.

Marvel’s The Defenders
The heroes of Netflix’s previous series in their Marvel Comics universe — Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones) — team up to ward off a threat to New York City in the form of the villainous Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver). The Shadow Riders
Based on the classic Louis L’Amour Western novel, this film stars Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott as brothers who fought on opposite sides of the Civil War, but now must team up to rescue their surviving family members, who have been kidnapped by a group of bandits.
The Essentials: “The Manchurian Candidate”
William Friedkin returns as host for tonight’s film, the 1962 Cold War suspense thriller The Manchurian Candidate, starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey and Janet Leigh. Costar Angela Lansbury was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for her supporting role as Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin. Though it was originally released in 1962, it went unseen for years after Sinatra purchased the rights in the 1970s and withdrew the film from circulation.
Princess Diana: Her Life — Her Death — The Truth
This encore of the two-hour primetime special from May, hosted by the compassionate Gayle King, explores the life and legacy of Princess Diana, and puts to rest many questions that still surround the crash that killed her.
Halt and Catch Fire

The Disappearance of Natalee Holloway

Jennifer Shannon (Lori Loughlin) buys a replica 15th-century suit of armor for a wealthy client whose hobby is taking part in epic battle re-enactments dressed as a medieval knight. Soon after, Jennifer discovers the dead body of a local professor of medieval history hidden in the armor. The prime suspect is a disgruntled student athlete, worried that his failing grade in history will keep him out of the pro-football draft. Clues further implicating the young athlete arrive by mail, but before Jennifer can resolve the case, the history professor’s beautiful teaching assistant becomes the next victim.
The Last Ship
The fourth season begins with a new mission to save humanity as the world continues to struggle for survival. Ben Edlund, who created the comedic comic book superhero The Tick in 1986, also created and executive produces this new live-action comedy series featuring the blue-suited title character, played by Peter Serafinowicz.
Based on a famous Japanese manga, this original film follows a high-school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds a great power: If the book’s owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Adam Wingard (Blair Witch) directed the film.
Kathy Bates headlines this comedy series from Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory) and former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum. Bates plays Ruth, a lifelong advocate for marijuana legalization, who finally lives her dream as the owner of a Los Angeles cannabis dispensary. Joining her are her entrepreneurial 20-something son, a very troubled security guard and three “budtenders.”

The Essentials: “White Heat”
William Friedkin’s choice for this week’s The Essentials is the classic crime-heist White Heat. It is one of the last of Warner Bros.’ gritty crime films and is an entertaining and hypnotic movie of a flamboyant, mother-dominated, psychotic killer. It was also 50-year-old Jimmy Cagney’s return to his popular, tough-guy gangster image. He even had his hand in molding the part he played, in suggesting to the writers to pattern the character of Cody Jarrett and his mother after the legendary outlaws Ma Barker and her boys and to make Cody psychotic. The movie’s infamous line “Made it, Ma! Top of the world!” was voted as the No. 18 movie quote (out of 100) by the American Film Institute.
Sun, Sand & Romance

Tricia Helfer stars as Kate, a woman whose romantic getaway turns into anything but relaxing when her boyfriend shifts his focus from pleasure to business in search of his next deal. Seemingly abandoned, Kate discovers that an old friend from her camp counselor days is the resort’s activities director (Helfer’s former Battlestar Galactica castmate Paul Campbell), who happily leads her on tropical adventures. Helfer shares, “It’s about finding your passion again and listening to your true self.” Duck Dynasty star Sadie Robertson also appears in the film.
