The film, whose title refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution that formally abolished slavery in America, chronicles the history of racial inequality in the United States.

Even worse is finding out that his sardonic boss, Pat (Dave Foley), nabbed the gig instead. “Pat says, ‘Maybe they wanted more thinking-man comedy, not desperate-man comedy,’” says Jeong. Ouch! Back on the home front, Ken’s preteen son, Dave (Albert Tsai), tries to shake an overly interested neighbor who stares at him through the kitchen window. “The stalker is played by my real-life daughter, Zooey,” Jeong says of his 9-year-old. The young Jeong doesn’t have any lines. “Zooey is a master of deadpan stares,” Jeong says. “I wrote this with her in mind. It turned out better than I expected.”
