Tonight marks the return of a kinda-sorta version of ABC’s “TGIT” lineup — formerly an “all Shondaland, all the time” evening that marked a must-see, deliciously soapy fest for fans of Shonda Rhimes’ signature brand of storytelling.
With Scandal Season 6 pushed to midseason to accommodate pregnant star Kerry Washington, ABC opted to sandwich the new Josh Berman-Mark Geragos mash-up (yes, really) Notorious between Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away With Murder, hoping fans of the evening’s brilliant but flawed heroines and their spunky teams of helpers won’t notice this gang’s not from Shonda. Or will, but won’t mind. Or won’t mind enough to change the channel, anyway.
Tonight will tell how well Notorious plays with its established neighbors, but in the meantime, here’s a quick reminder of where we left off on Grey’s and HTGAWM and what you can expect as the new seasons bow.
GREY’S ANATOMY — 8/7 CT
Where We Left Off: Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) might finally accept and warm up to the flawed and whiny Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), who did end up marrying Owen (Kevin McKidd). Trapped at Meredith’s house, Ben (Jason George) has to do another emergency C-section, this one with a better outcome. Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Meredith are potentially both interested in Riggs (Martin Henderson). Jo’s (Camilla Luddington) got a secret past and a hubby (what?!), and Karev (Jake McLaughlin) went ape on an innocent DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti).
What To Expect? Season 13 will undoubtedly explore Jo’s past with her abusive husband and any future relationship she can salvage with Karev, as well as Meredith’s unusual relationship with Riggs. But rumors have been circulating that Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) may give their relationship another go, and April may make amends with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). Also, no more Dr. Callie (Sara Ramirez).
HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER —10/9 CT
Where We Left Off : Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) fled to her mom, Wes (Alfred Enoch) confronted Mahoney (Adan Arkin) about being his dad and ended up covered in his blood, and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) seriously messed with Connor’s (Jack Falahee) future.
What to Expect: Annalise and Co. (but especially Annalise) had a rough run last season and it looks like they won’t fare too much better in Season 3. According to ABC, as the Keating 5 head into their second year of law school, “Annalise’s reputation at Middleton University is on the line, so she creates a criminal law clinic where the students will compete to try their own pro bono cases. … With Wallace Mahoney’s murder unsolved and Frank’s whereabouts still unknown, Annalise and her inner circle struggle to keep their secrets from getting exposed. Relationships will be fractured, lies will spin out of control, and a shocking, new mystery will upend their entire lives.” Which is just how HTGAWM fans like it. Look for Mary J. Blige to guest-star.
