This is hard to argue, considering the French-Canadian bombshell returned to the company the same night Miz won the Intercontinental championship. Since then, the two have been inseparable on the road.
“It’s great,” Maryse said, holding her husband’s hand during a recent red carpet of a “WWE 2K17” event in New York City. “I just wish he wouldn’t listen to Howard Stern on the rides at night. Besides that, it’s great. I get to see my husband, who is the best in the world.”
“She is annoyed with me going, ‘Hey now!’ every five seconds,” Miz added. “It’s amazing for me to have her and be around her. It’s one thing to FaceTime and to call each other on the phone. But to have her, to hold her, to touch her, to kiss her; there is nothing better to have that on the road.”
Maryse serves as extra motivation for Miz, who is enjoying a lengthy title reign on SmackDown Live. The former WWE champion and WrestleMania main-eventer has upped his game in recent weeks. Viewers praised Miz during a recent promo on Daniel Bryan during Talking Smack on WWE Network. In three minutes, Miz created a buzz throughout the industry.
“It really is nice for her to be by my side,” he said. “I get to show off in front of her and show what I can do.”
These days Maryse can be seen ringside predominately as a manager for Miz. However, she has had much wrestling success in her own right as a former two-time Divas champion.
“I think I’m in a good spot right now,” Maryse said. “I really enjoy what I’m doing. I get to work with my husband, and we are doing pretty well together. I like being in this supportive role. Before when I was with WWE, I think I accomplished a lot. I was where I wanted to be. Now I just want to have fun.”
Since her reappearance, fans haven’t seen Maryse wrestling in matches. Does this mean we’ve seen the last French Kiss finisher delivered?
“The No. 1 question she is always asked is when can we see her back in the ring,” Miz said. “Time will tell. We will see what happens. She is doing so much right now. She just had a movie come out on SyFy called Isle of the Dead trending worldwide. It was really well-received. Then we have the video game, with ‘WWE 2K17’ coming out in October. There is so much happening right now. We’ll see what happens.”
Fans will get to see the couple onscreen outside WWE television in The Marine 5: Battleground early next year. Maryse is also joining the cast of Total Divas during Season 6 on E!. Miz is no stranger to reality television, initially known for his involvement in The Real World and other MTV series.
“It’s definitely different for me,” Maryse said. “They come into your house. They come into your life. Cameras come into places you don’t normally film at. Usually, you have the filming for WWE. So it will be interesting. People will see what it’s like in our lives outside WWE.”
“It’s definitely different from the reality I remember,” Miz said, on the Total Divas experience thus far. “But it’s a lot of fun. She doesn’t need any advice from me, though. She does great on her own. She is a natural.”
Miz spent the first few years of his WWE career proving he was more than just a reality-show star looking for his extra 15 minutes of fame. He put in the hours to break out of the stigma attached to him. Miz slowly earned the respect of his co-workers and management with his unwavering work ethic and drive to succeed. When a superstar is needed for a last-minute media call or appearance, Miz is there.
“Miz — a veteran in WWE? Did you think that would happen?” Miz asked. “I didn’t. I almost believed everyone saying I’d be gone in three months. I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to try my hardest and do whatever I possibly can to stay here.’ And here I am 10 years later, trying to bring these young guys up and show them the ropes.”
Among them has been the athletic Apollo Crews.
“There is no denying his athletic ability in the ring,” Miz said. “But I’m the one who gets deserves to bring the honor, the prestige to the Intercontinental championship. That’s exactly what we have been doing.”
Miz is one of the longest-tenured performers consistently on the active roster these days. Now with so many getting the call-up from NXT, the “Most Must-See Superstar” hopes to lead by example.
“I think people who come up think it will be exactly the same as it is in NXT and the Performance Center, and it’s not,” Miz said.
“It’s completely different. So you try to warm them up and get them prepared and ready for what WWE has to offer. I don’t think anything can prepare you fully, so you prepare them as much as possible. You talk to them on the road and have them experience the way the crowds work. The crowds are completely different on the main roster than they are at NXT. NXT is a smaller venue. Here you are in the biggest venues and on the biggest shows with Raw and SmackDown Live. So to help them out here is kind of what I’ve been doing.”
