Welcome to the 60’s! NBC has released the first promo video of its December musical extravaganza, Hairspray Live!
So feast your eyes on the fabulousness; once you see the cast in their costumes, we bet You Can’t Stop the Beat!
The campy musical is based on a 1987 film by director John Waters, and tells the tale of plucky and plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad whose dreams of stardom come true when she is selected to join the cast of a local teen dance program. Tracy tries to use her celebrity clout to racially integrate the dance program in 1962 Baltimore. The original film starred Rikki Lake as Tracy and when it was reimagined as a musical, Marissa Jaret Winokur starred as Tracy and the tradition began of having a man in drag — in this case Harvey Fierstein — play Tracy’s mother, Edna. The musical was shot as a film in 2007 with a star-studded cast and unknown ice cream-scooper Nikki Blonsky landed the tasty role of Tracy with John Travolta playing the gender-bending role of Edna.
NBC’s live version will also be chocked-full of celebs. Newcomer Maddie Baillio has been chosen to play Tracy and Harvey Fierstein will return to his Tony-winning role as Edna Turnblad and write the teleplay. Jennifer Hudson will star as Motormouth Maybelle and Derek Hough is set to play Corny Collins. Kristin Chenoweth has been cast as villainous Velma Von Tussle and Ariana Grande will play the perky role of Tracy’s BFF, Penny Pingleton. Martin Short will bring his wit to Tracy’s joke shop-owning father, and the roles of Amber Von Tussle and Link Larkin will be played by Dove Cameron and Garrett Clayton. And Sean Hayes and Rosie O’Donnell will make special appearances as the purveyor of plus sized clothing, Mr. Pinky, and the gym teacher.
The :30 promo spot will have its TV debut Friday, Aug. 19, during NBC’s Olympic primetime telecast.
