It’s unclear whether or not Starz having the word “star” in its name had any impact on this, but the box office-busting, enormously popular and generally well-reviewed seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will make its exclusive television premiere Saturday, Sept. 10, on all six Starz channels at 9pm ET/PT, with a repeat at 11:20pm ET/PT, the network announced today. Additionally, the film will be available for download via the Starz app as of Sept. 10.
“No greater fandom has ever existed than the Star Wars fans, and we are thrilled to be the exclusive home of The Force Awakens,” said Chris Albrecht, President and CEO of Starz. “We are offering a variety of ways for fans and subscribers to watch – on the STARZ networks, on demand, by streaming or download on the STARZ App or through an Amazon Prime STARZ subscription. We want to make the movie as accessible as the fans’ appetites for what is truly one of the greatest franchises of all time.”
J.J. Abrams directed and co-wrote (with Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt) the mega-hit, which was released theatrically last December and has quickly become the highest-grossing domestic film of all time (unadjusted for inflation) and the third highest-grossing film ever worldwide, pulling in over $2 billion.
Along with reuniting fans with original character favorites like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2, the film also introduced the adventures of Rey (newcomer Daisy Ridley), reluctant stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega), villainous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). Legendary composer John Williams returned to the series with another thrilling score. Fans will still have to wait well over a year to see these adventures continue, though; while the next installment, Star Wars: Episode VIII, wrapped up principal photography this week, the film won’t be released to theaters until Dec. 15, 2017.
