Whether you find the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest great or gross, this contest is All-American.

When celebrating America’s birthday, nothing is quite as patriotic as enjoying a good ol’ hot dog. Or in the case of Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, 62. That’s the number of wieners and buns consumed in 10 minutes by the 2015 men’s winner, Matt Stonie. On July 4, he and 2015 women’s champ Miki Sudo will return to New York’s Coney Island to defend their titles in the 100th Annual Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. The feeding frenzy will air live on streaming service ESPN3 before being rebroadcast on ESPN and ESPN2.

The contest’s origin is a hazy legend claiming that, in 1916, shortly after Nathan Handwerker and his wife Ida opened their nickel hot hog stand at the corner of Surf and Stillwell, four immigrants faced off in a July 4 hot dog eating contest to determine who was the most patriotic. Whether fact or fable, that contest is considered the institution’s first (although records trace the contest only back to 1972), and turns this year’s gastric gluttony into a centennial celebration. And while we hope for a big showing for the major milestone, we sincerely hope that no one eats a hundred hot dogs, or there won’t be any left for us.

What do you think of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest: Great or Gross? How many hot dogs do you think you can shove down your gullet in 10 minutes?
