National Geographic Channel’s new series I Am Rebel has a new episode, “Phreaks and Geeks,” which premieres Sunday, June 26 at 9/8CT.
The series focuses on individuals that break the rules in order to create a name for themselves. This episode is no exception. Kevin Mitnick takes on the world of phone and computer hacking, beginning in the 1980s when the technology was relatively new. He cannot seem to stop this obsession, always craving an “intellectual challenge” and a “pursuit of knowledge,” as he puts it.
Even multiple arrests and the FBI do not stop Mitnick. The episode takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes tour of just how easy it can be to get individuals’ — or even corporations’ — information.
In this fascinating, technology-filled episode, you see the thrill Mitnick gets from hacking, and what a threat hacking can be in general. As Mitnick turns his talents from harmful to helpful, he explains just how dangerous hackers can be to our data systems. As we progress as a digital society, the risk shifts from individuals to outside nations gaining access to our confidential information. Mitnick has dedicated his life to helping companies and corporations maintain secure programs, ones hackers cannot get into easily.
The episode will make you think about the digital footprint you leave, and just how easy it is for someone to hack your information. As is said in the show, “no matter how hard you try, we are always going to get in.” If there is a will, there is a way, and Mitnick aims to help the government from being exploited by hackers who can virtually access any electronic system.
I Am Rebel allows the public to hear the stories of outsiders who created change by thinking outside the box. Not always ethically correct, the stories and individuals do, however, shed light on pertinent topics in today’s society.
This episode is sure to keep you on your toes as you see how law-breaking individuals helped shape a safer nation.
