Supergirl Renewed, Will Be Flying Over to The CW for Season 2

Fans of CBS’ excellent new series Supergirl were a bit concerned in recent weeks as talks of renewing the show went on. And questions arose even beyond whether it would return: Would it change networks? Would its budget be substantially cut?

At least some of those questions were answered yesterday when it was widely reported that Supergirl will indeed return. And yes, it will be changing networks, moving to the The CW. It is also moving its production from Los Angeles to Vancouver, likely to save costs.

Will we be seeing more Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and The Flash (Grant Gustin) crossovers now that Kara’s new home will be on The CW?

And that was one thing about Supergirl that made it so appealing, aside from its excellent cast (particularly the lead, Melissa Benoist, and Calista Flockhart). The show just looked so damn good. You could tell it had more money to play with than its DC Comics kin over on The CW, like The Flash. I love The Flash, but it, at times, shows its limitations in terms of visual effects budget. Supergirl came off more as feature-film quality, so it will be interesting to see how the move to Vancouver — and likely other budget cuts involved with changing networks — will come across.

But as long as Benoist remains in the title role, the show should be enjoyable. Especially now, with the CW move, if Supergirl can cross over more freely with the other DC characters. Benoist and Grant Gustin (who plays The Flash) recently worked together on a crossover episode of Supergirl, and they had very enjoyable chemistry. So it would be great to see, and it is probably likely that we will, more crossovers not only with The Flash, but other characters like Arrow, or maybe even an appearance on Legends of Tomorrow.

In that respect, DC would be establishing a nice little television universe for themselves, even if their big-screen attempt at kicking off a movie universe to rival Marvel’s generally wasn’t received too well (looking at you, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice).

Hopefully we’ll hear more Supergirl details when The CW delivers its upfront presentation on May 19.
