  1. Nicole! Smart woman, she picked an excellent spot for her camp. Keeps catching HUGE SALMON! Has a great attitude, hopefully the bear will leave her alone. She is my pick for winning! Also her knowledge of edible plants is a great help!

  2. Randy is starting to turn around. I like the cabin. Not sure how strong it is. Now if he can only catch some fish.

  3. Our family has a cottage just a few miles away in the Hamlet of Quatsino (population about 75). It is fun for our kids to see islands and vistas in the background that they, and us, recognize. So far it seems pretty authentic, although having lived their for 8 years while our kids were growing up, I’d definitely do a few things differently. For starters – and some have done this – pile on the extra growth around your tent for when bad weather arrives. Your tent should start looking more like a beaver’s home than a tent. Also, there are salal berries year round. Haven’t see anyone talk about eating them or some other berry for critical vitamins – important when eating just sea food.

I am curious about a few things. I wonder if the producers allowed them to kill deer or not. Deer are all over the place but the production company might now have wanted to deal with the whole animal cruelty thing. Anyway, been fun to watch.

  4. Gee Ken, I’d sure be scared of a man with inner fortitude, mental clarity and inner strength who knows how to shoot or use other means to get food. I’m sure in your military and LE background you’ve met some of these.
As far as getting bogged down by faith, I think Mike and Dave’s faith will be a huge asset. Apparently it’s worked for them for 50 some years and they still think God loves them. I think they’ve both been dealt some hardships before and their faith has been a guide.
Fact is there are a number of talented outdoorsman: Jose, Nicole, Mike, Randy, Dave and Larry. …and there are some who are tough people such as Justin and Mary Kate.
Desmond and Tracy, thanks for your service. Wish you guys hung in there longer.
Accident or illness can happen to everyone. They all have skills. I think inner strength like Ken talks about will be a deciding factor, regardless of their marksmanship ability.

  5. I think Jose first- he seems to live this stuff more than some others (and I’m thinking that their covering so little of Jose and Nicole in the first few episodes means there will be a lot of them later). I would like to put Mike pretty high up there, but I think the psychological impact of his childhood will make it hard for him to be alone as long as it will take to win… seems to already miss his wife more intensely than other contestants (that could be editing, but with what they’re showing, that’s how it looks to me). I also think Justin and Nicole have a good chance.

  6. I looked at the survival items they can choose from and, am wondering, as I was on Naked & Afraid, how do the women deal with menstrual items? Of course, no woman is going to have a tampon string hanging from their privates and, in Naked & Afraid, they’re naked, what do they do about this?

    • I read somewhere that they give them a Diva cup or something like it on Naked and Afraid. I was wondering that about Alone too. I’m guessing it’s something like the same- it’s too bad they don’t publish that on the gear list. I teach survival skills to teens and find that girls have a lot of questions about whether blood will attract bears, how to deal with their periods in the wild, etc. Not addressing it seems like a major gap in what it takes to survive for a large percent of the population. I’m sure they give them something, and it should be on the published gear list!

I once had a dad from one of my camps pack tampons in all three of his kids’ survival kits, male or female, because it was such a good firestarter (:

      • Larry will forever stand out as the most disgusting contestant on Alone.

His wife and kids surely feared his wrath all their lives! Can you imagine calling this man husband or father?

You get the idea that if he could, he would burn all the forests on earth, slaughter every animal to extinction, and murder every human being. This guy goes postal daily. He’s an ultra scary man. He can’t produce a single sentence without 4 profanities. He’s completely unglued.

It’s disgusting that The History Channel continues to show any part of his pitiful journey. It ruins this beautiful show.

        • Brenda, I haven’t seen any of his journey and we have been VERY confused as to why it says “final 5” but they are only showing 4. So what was he doing that they have removed him completely? We haven’t seen him in the last 4 episodes. I’ve been searching but haven’t found much on it, in fact your comment here is the first I’ve found!

  7. I’m finding it hard to get too involved in this show because you only see certain survivalists every 2 weeks; hard to keep them straight but, now that it’s whittled down to 7, it might get easier. Still, I would like to see a bit each one every week.

  8. You all are underestimating mike Lowe. He is not a quitter, and he is in his environment.

      • Maybe not a palace but certainly reflects qualities of a typical SERE instructor camp. Make the SERE folks proud, Mike.

    • I know Mike Lowe and this is right up his alley! He should win unless a bear eats him! More likely that he would eat the bear!

  9. After watching Tracy fight off a bear cub, I’m sure the mother was close by, thinking maybe Desmond got it right. She had a flair gun & a horn,
    but still….

    • Let’s be clear here, Tracy unequivically did not “fight off” a bear cub. What she did was yell and blast her air horn, there was no fight.

      • You’re so right Ken, she didn’t fight anything off. I think she just chickened out knowing the possible dangers around her. Too bad, I was rooting for her.

  10. After seeing program 3, I will have to modify my pick somewhat.
Jose, Mike and Tracy, not necessarily in that order.
I was sorry to see Mary Kate leave, but we should all pay attention on how not to split wood.

    • Oops, you can scratch Tracy off your list. Actually I called her tap out right after her bio. She should have been the second to leave right after Dippy Desmond but Mary Kate cut herself pretty seriously so Tracy became number three instead of number two. Mary Kate knew better and likely was more devastated by how she cut herself than actually cutting herself. I always picked Jose, Mary Kate and Nicole to be the final three.

      • I liked Tracy. She reminded me of “Super Sue” Aikens from Life Below Zero — a tough old bird who doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty — and I figured she seemed ready to hunker down for a few months. Jose is still my favorite.

        • I liked her too but not to be the “last man standing” she just didn’t have what it takes which is typical of Law enforcement/Military people. All of their bravery is associated with a gun, not with intestinal fortitude, mental clarity or inner strength. If they have nothing to kill/murder their perceived threats they’re gutted. It was perfect that Tracy blamed her tapping out on herself being too ‘aggressive’ when, clearly, it was herself being scared senseless, just like Desmond.

          • dude, I am retired military and a female. they rarely gave me a weapon out in the field. the only thing I had was my edc knife. I don’t know what the hell you have against us but, you have a deluded view of military personnel. the majority of us were not in combat or even combat roles. when I was in the base or post could have been under attack and they wouldn’t have given us weapons.
desmond was a joke. as a former pol troop I was embarrassed how he portrayed himself as some Rambo. dez, dude, you were a glorified gas jockey….just like me. stop acting like you were frontline 11B mech inf.
I think the forest with animals bigger than him tripped him out. hell, he even broke his silky bigboy 2000 xl teeth he was so busy watching the tree line for bears.

I don’t know what made tracy snap but, she obviously has issues. people die, crap happens, move on. get help…it’s there.

  11. Not looking good for Mary Kate, cutting her hand.
Wondering why everybody doesn’t have a gill net.
Someone else caint find that ferro rod. We’re dropping like flies & just got here.

  12. Kellie,
What is the purpose of polls and your questions regarding this and other shows?? Especially when your fans receive no results or responses or acknowledgement to their answers. Just wondering????

    • Hi J.C., This poll does allow people to see how other fans respond; Jose is leading with 21% of the vote, to Tracy’s 20%. Alone isn’t a series that I’m currently recapping, but because so many fans of Naked and Afraid mentioned it as a show that they enjoy, I wanted to offer a place where fans of the show could have a little fun.

      • Thanks for reply! I haven’t watched this show (no time-maybe repeats) but I like your work on N&A.

        • Hi J. C., nice to see you on this forum as well as N&A. This seems like a great show, have watched all 3 episodes. Did you watch XL last summer? I signed up for an e-mail from N&A when they will start airing this year’s XL. 🙂

  13. I think it will come down to Tracy or José. They both seem the most calm and level headed. I don’t see someone like David (I think that’s his name) who lost his temper on the first day, making it very long. And poor Desmond…as soon as he said he was ex-military I knew it wouldn’t be long…but who knew it would literally be a matter of hours.

    • Totally agree with you. I didn’t have much hope for Tracy because of her weight but she’s kicking ass. I also like Jose; he is doing great.

      • Um, nice to see you here Laurajane, but just how exactly is Tracy “kicking ass”? She built a decent (not great) shelter, she hasn’t done much in the food acquisition area and she’s done precisely nothing at all in the saving her ass from predator department either aside from pressing the button on an air horn.

    • I picked Jose, Mary Kate and Nicole as the final three. Now that Mary Kate is out I’d still pick Jose, Nicole and Mike Lowe now. We call Mike the Chris Christopherson doppleganger and he sure has some great crafts skills and a great attitude.

  14. I think Tracy will outlast the rest, she is out there for other reasons not the money.

      • Oops not only did Tracy not outlast the rest she was very nearly the second one to tap out as I predicted. The only reason she was third was because Mary Kate made a very rookie mistake, a mistake that she well knew better than to do. But, look on the bright side, Tracy didn’t tap because she was afraid, no, no no, she tapped out because she was too “aggressive”. Hahahahaha, too aggressive, Aha, hahaha, gasp, sputter, cough, sorry can’t help myself, too aggressive, yeah right.

  15. Desmond was the most pathetic person I’ve ever seen. “If you see a bear fight, you better help the bear”… Well, we never had to help a bear cuz Desmond was fighting one, but we did have to rescue Desmond because he was afraid of the woods and saw bear scat.

I know many people will say the baseline phrase “you don’t know what it’s like unless you do it”, but he was dropped off during daylight and was picked up, the same day, during daylight. I can’t begin to grasp the people applying to do this when out of 3,500 applicants, this person who was afraid of (not only the dark, but the flippin trees themselves) aren’t even capable to making it till the sun goes down.

Who was capable of making it past at least one single night that was disqualified? Who could have had a standing chance over the guy who was afraid of the dark? I mean, seriously, he didn’t even make it to sun down on day 1. You need to change the way you decide who is able to be in this contest.

    • I would have built my damn lean-to and slept through the night even if a bear crawled in and slept next to me. Just to avoid the utter humiliation. Especially after all the trash talk and bravado.

  16. Tracy is my choise based on her emphasis on fishing, however I hope she did not take a down bag. Everything will depend on her frame of mind.

I was sorry to see Desmond go so early, but then again he is a “meat head”.

  17. I think Tracy will be last! She has what it takes and is not a whiner…….I am pulling for her!!

    • Not a prayer. Obese people just don’t have the energy or stamina it takes. Plus, ex-cop/ex-military doesn’t bode well for her chances either.

      • The military pepole always think they are the toughest but usually end up having the hardest time. They aren’t cut out for solitude or loneliness, which is the #1 hardest thing to overcome in this type of competition.

        • we are trained to put up with a lot of crap….as a team…not as a lone person. there is a reason sniper and spec ops have a portion of their weeding out process making prospects do some alone time. because most people don’t do well. we are pretty tough…sadly, the military doesn’t have the time to take each person and train them how to deal with this stuff. most civilians can’t either. but, I will still take a soldier, marine or first responder with me when confronted with danger.

  18. Damon didn’t even make it till dusk on the first day! Remember, he was the one telling his “brothas” that someone will need to be rescuing the bears cause HE will be the eating THEM. Hang your head low Damon, that was worse than pathetic.

  19. Kellie, what do you think about asking your viewers to pick who is going home next? My wife and I picked Desmond to go first since black guys don’t handle camping well at all and the military guys are next. Probably the next to go is Tracy, ex-cop (they never deal much with anything when they can’t have a gun) also ex-military (don’t quite know what it is about the military people , maybe it’s when they’re in a ‘survival’ situation they’re there with a dozen other people with ample tools and food. We’re thinking the two religious group survival instructors go one after the other on the principle that first they’re ‘instructors’ and second they’re bogged own by their philosophy. Thinking the final two will be Nicole and Jose. Will know more as the show progresses. I’d hope that Mary Kate would be in the final three, we’ll see.
