When Is The Ten Commandments On TV? 2016

The Ten Commandments

The Ten CommandmentsIt’s an annual sign of spring and a symbol of the most holy time of year for many Christians: the annual airing of The Ten Commandments. In 2015, ABC aired the cinematic classic on Easter evening; but this year, the network will air the film on Saturday night, March 26 from 7:00-11:44pm ET/PT.

The legendary Cecil B. DeMille film from 1956 tells the Biblical tale of Moses from his birth through leading the Jews from Egypt to the Promised Land, complete with the burning bush, the parting of the Red Sea and Moses receipt of the holy tablets from God. And although the film depicts the holiday of Passover, it has become an Easter tradition for many families.

Starring Charlton Heston in the iconic role of Moses, the film from Paramount Pictures also stars legendary actors Yul Brynner as Rameses, Anne Baxter as Queen Nefretiri, Edward G. Robinson as Dathan, Yvonne de Carlo as Sephora, Vincent Price as Baka, Debra Paget as Lilia, John Derek as Joshua, and features Sir Cedric Hardwicke as Sethi, Nina Foch as Bithiah, Martha Scott as Yochabel, Judith Anderson as Memnet, among others.

The Ten Commandments was filmed on location in Egypt, Mount Sinai and the Sinai Peninsula, and was DeMille’s last and most successful work. It is a partial remake of his 1923 silent film of the same title, and features one of the largest sets ever created for a motion picture. At the time of its release on November 8, 1956, it was the most expensive film ever made.

In 1957, the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, and Charlton Heston was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) for his role as Moses. It is also one of the most financially successful films ever made, grossing approximately $122.7 million at the box office during its initial release — it was the most successful film of 1956 and the second-highest grossing film of the decade.

  2. I am very upset that ABC decided to air the The Ten Commandments on Saturday night instead of today, Easter Sunday. It comes on every Easter Sunday since I was a kid, and this is a huge disappointment. I’ve been searching every channel looking all over for it.

  3. So upset I missed this. It’s usually aired on Easter Sunday. I can assure you I will be sure and check tv listings in advance next year:(

  4. Upset that I missed this movie. Should have been on more than once over the holiday. Everything else is always in re-run. Why not this?

  5. My Husband and I was waiting to see The Ten Commandments tonight we have watch it together for 21 years it always came on Sunday I was looking for it on the Dish guide and couldn’t fine it so I google it and it said it came on last night I’m so disappointed it just don’t seem right.

  6. WHY is this not being broadcast on Easter, like it is EVERY year? My family has watched this together since I was a child. Extremely disappointed! !

  7. I’m very upset for the simple fact i didn’t know that the Ten Commandments showed yesterday. i thought it showed today and i was so thrilled to see it.

  8. So annoyed that it was aired on Saturday. Many people, including myself, take the holiday off so we can enjoy it ON Easter. Now I won’t get to see it like I do traditionally every Easter when it airs 🙁

  9. This should be aired on channel 7 or channel 9 or channel 10 as the midday movie like it always has been, are we really that scared of what other religions think that we are now airing this epic movie on a ABC channel!

  10. Nothing to do with Easter. Should be shown during Passover. It’s the story of Passover.

  11. I first saw The Ten Commandments at the drive in. I have loved this movie ever since. I will be watching it this evening for sure.

  12. I used this to find when or if it would be airing this year. Thank you! I haven’t watched The Ten Commandments in a number of years, but I try to catch it every Easter, when I can.

  13. I am grateful it is being shown, I was brought up watching, and brought my children up watching it. We have come a long way from being Godly, and every day we are taking away Him (God) out of the picture. The world is so dark and gross darker the people. Just like the Good Book days.

  14. I am so glad it is being shown!
    The Ten Commandments and
    Ben -Hur are my favorites!

  15. I just got back from seeing it at a local theater as part of a Turner Classic Movies Fathom events. I’ve seen it every time it’s been on TV, saw it as a small child , but hadn’t seen it on big screen in the 60s when it was brought back.It is still amazingly impressive on the big screen. Just LOVE it. It was tradition in my family to watch it while chewing down on Easter dinner & candy from Easter baskets. I’ll be watching again Saturday nite !!

  16. I am soo thrilled they are airing the Ten Commandments the night before Easter to tradition.(last year it showed on Easter Sunday evening). Enjoy everyone!

    • I was happy to see the change too. Last year, I read a lot of complaints that the Sunday nigh broadcast ended too late for families, so I am glad that they’ve moved it to a non-school night.
