Elodie Yung thinks Elektra in Marvel’s Daredevil “is kind of a sociopath”

Marvel’s Daredevil, the acclaimed Netflix series based on the comic, returns for Season 2 on Netflix March 18, with Charlie Cox again playing the title hero, joined by returning cast members Deborah Ann Woll as Karen, Elden Henson as Foggy, Rosario Dawson as Claire and Scott Glenn as Stick.

New to the Daredevil series are Elodie Yung as Elektra, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher. You may remember these two characters from various film incarnations, but it sounds like there will be some unique takes on them in this series.

“We think Elektra is kind of a sociopath, you know,” Yung told reporters at a recent press conference. “She’s — this world is a game for her. It’s like a chess game, and what motivates her is what she wants. She’ll use anything she needs to use to get to her goal, and if she needs to kill people, she would. She has this coldness. … I think Elektra isn’t a bad person. She’s not a good person. She’s a person with different traits, with layers, and she’s seeking for who she is. This season there’s an arc to her story, and hopefully we’ll find out who she really is by the end of it.”

Yung also mentioned that we will “definitely” see a costume for Elektra during the course of the season, similar to how we saw Matt Murdock eventually don the familiar garb of Daredevil in Season 1.

Co-executive producer and co-showrunner Doug Petrie explained how the presence of both Elektra and Frank Castle in Daredevil’s world made sense for Season 2.

“Season 1 is [where] the guy becomes a hero, and now what are you doing to do?” Petrie said. “And I think that addresses the costume [at the end of Season 1], because he was hiding in the shadows in Year 1, and now he’s kind of openly going, ‘Hey, New York, here I am. You’ve got to deal with me now, good and bad.’

“And Frank Castle is, and certainly Elektra — the reason that these two are the perfect choices for right now in [positioning the season as] ‘What is it to be a hero?’ is that Frank Castle comes and really stirs the pot, and is like, ‘Oh, you’re going to do this? I’m going to do this, too. I’m not that different. You’re not superior. There’s a little difference between us.’ And that little difference is an enormous moral chasm that is kind of the engine for the season — that and Elektra’s differences as well.”
